Anyone who thinks it's coming back up ASAP is too optimistic about what it entails, anyone who thinks it'll take more than a few days is too optimistic about how much of the work beyond "we got it to run again and propped a chair against the doorknob for security" the devs will actually care to do.

No way. Consider that even jannies give their IRL identity, mods are too entrenched to do something like this in this visible a fashion. 50/50 that he applied to be a janny to see what extra information he could gleam from the priveleged (but still limited) access you get at that level, or more likely either knew a janny or compromised the account of a staff member. Very possible he didn't need that much more info than socially engineering the fact that the server's OS hadn't been updated in a fucking decade, "weakest link in the chain" does not even begin to describe how much that opens it up. Could probably google an entire list of patched (but only for people who actually updated sometime this century) vulnerabilities and just try a couple.

OS (and web browser) are the few things you should always always always update, and if you don't trust it enough to update it, then you shouldn't be using that one anymore.

Also, two things I noticed that speedreaders seemingly didn't pick up on:
1. When the guy talked about shell access, he used past tense ("had"). I doubt there's any access right now, they resorted to pulling the plug altogether rather quickly. He could also just be lying to give them a false sense of security, of course.
2. The faildox of the supposed tranny admin does not mention the email I saw posted in the leak (astrange), instead one that is one letter off (arstrange). Clicking one or two of the linked profiles didn't give me 4chan admin vibes at all, many of the leaked janny/mod ones still had a very distinct "terminally online/internet culture" tinge to them (even when they never mentioned 4chan) that wasn't present here. The stated age also makes no sense for any position besides janny, much too young. This is what happens when you try to outsource do- phonebooking work to brown 12 year olds. Just because one user of the site had the wits to pwn 4chan this hard doesn't mean the rest of them are doing anything more than fatfingering the emails into shitty skid scripts and OSINT sites and copy/pasting the results without scrutiny.
