The userbase had gotten so bad that more often than not I saw people actually engaging with his posts rather than ignoring whatever he had to say, calling him a namefag and telling him to kill himself.

I'm surprised so many anons interacted with namefags and tripfags on a regular basis. The anon ethos wasn't just snobbery, it was basic opsec. Its why the oldfags made that a meme in the first place and it stuck for so long.
Names are keywords.

I missed the April Fools' stunt, but later I saw some anons say that Brazilians turned out to be surprisingly based, and India supplies most of the recognizable schizos.
Flags and IDs, for sure.

There was a /pol/ macaco that was a consistently excellent poster on history, easily one of the best posters on /pol/.
There was also a schizo brazilian who talked about gang stalking a lot, I think I saw a thread where another brazilian tried to check his portuguese and he abandoned the thread. Its possible a lot of the demoralizingly consistent schizo characters floating around were LARPs.

Namefags have been a part of 4chins culture for longer than a lot of people have been on the site (longer than a lot of people have even been alive even).
Yeah, I hate them too. But I vividly remember there being an absolute shit ton of namefags/tripfags on /v/ and /mu/ about 12-13 years ago. And there were some on /b/ even back during its heyday. I still see mentions of some of them to this day like Manly Tears, CLT and The Tourist. Quentin is even known outside of 4chan nowadays.
A lot of anons just see tripfags as something to poke and prod and pray they do or say something retarded so they can gets some keks at their expense. Personally, if I have a problem I just filter.

/pol/ was just dogshit I guess, I could see other boards having some namefags that were just retards, but everything on /pol/ was some kind of cancer.
