Because self-righteous degenerate freaks are the only people pathetic enough to want to do it for free AND to have the capacity for it. Most normal person who genuinely want to better some online community will struggle to find the time for it while balancing their personal life, a 'normal' degenerate freak just wants to goon.

I remember plenty of people on /lit/ with incredibly esoteric tastes in lit, who could actually discuss them in a way that made it clear they'd actually read them. Same with /mu/ in terms of musical taste. Sure a lot of them were pretentious faggots high on their own farts, but they weren't illiterate.
