The funny thing is, he isn't wrong. People, streamers, lpers getting early review copies are shills, they are getting extra exposition for having the "privilege" of being the first to play a highly anticipating game. They are going to get those extra views and internet shekels from the traffic thanks to being the first and the few to show the game.
Phil he is right for calling those shills out.

At it's core, Phil is right, but he dresses it up with so much inaccurate shit that it becomes offensive.
Yes they're shills, but they're not paid shills. Then he goes on to say they're not "TRUE GAMERS" (what does that even mean? I'd wager that they like video games more than him, he fucking hates them) and they're all doing it solely for a paycheck.
This is why Phil will never learn, he takes his "grain of truth" and turns it into a mountain of shit, and holds onto the grain as to why he's not wrong.

But the problem is, he is DSP, the most hated mainstream LPer on the internet. He is also incredibly salty and is being a fucking asshole with the way he is dealing with the backlash.

Actually, DSP, as an Italian is a minority streamer on Twitch and comes from a marginalized background. These people are trying to exclude him from Twitch because he doesn't conform to their gender and race ideals.

Phil has been harassed on a continuing basis to greater extents than any of these people whining at him over a stupid tweet ever have. I myself have seen first hand several videos on YouTube making fun of Phil's Italian heritage.

These people should seriously sign the AnyKey pledge and start being more inclusive of Italians afflicted with gout:

I agree that the practice of giving a select few early access to a game is kinda shady and unfair, but I don’t blame people for actually taking that opportunity. If I were a streamer, I would definitely accept the offer just to get some more views out of it. From a business point of view, it makes sense. So I wouldn’t call those streamers shills. The big irony here is that Phil would also accept these offers if he could (assuming he has any clue of how to run his business). Just points out his hypocrisy even more.

Holy shit, that is actually a great idea to fuck with people even more.

That. He is right. He is not being honest here, he probably would love to be a shill as well, but he is mad because devs are dropping him in favor or less "toxic" streamers.
He wouldn't be so vocal about this if he wasn't salty about it. He wouldn't be saying this shit if he also got an early copy. Satly, so much salt.

Either way, he is right, but like you implied, the problem isn't the message since he is right by calling those people shills. The problem is how he presented the message, how inflammatory it was. He was right to say this but he was wrong in the way he said it and how he is dealing with this shit by either doubling down with his accusations or apologizing like a beta.

Also in reality he doesn't actually give a fuck. He's just saying stuff like that because it's good ammo against the people he's jealous of. He's not holding any sort of moral high horse at all. If he could get the free copies, he would, and if he got a constant streak of free copies he wouldn't complain about this at all and he wouldn't care that other "shills" get free copies. He's just mad that they're getting free copies and not him and so others watch them over him because they get to see the game early.

What he's really trying to say is "I'm mad these people get games before me for free, its so unfair! I want free games too!" and that final "I want free games too" is what makes him deserved to be shit on, because he's a hypocrite in that regard because we all know he totally would accept the game for free, just as he has before.

My personal stance is that they ARE shills who use their clout at the same time but they're also "true gamers" whatever the fuck that means. I think they actually like games and didn't just hop on a bandwagon solely to get money and have never played a game before, which is genuinely what he thinks. Funnily enough the only streamer that I know who seems to not enjoy video games and seems to be doing it just for a paycheck is Phil. Which is what made his tweet even more dumb. Just his entire tweet reeked of hypocrisy from the free copy thing to the paycheck thing. Phil was not the right person to call these people out on this matter.

The only problem with it in practice is that its obviously a relationship system where some people are going to receive preferential treatment.

Twitch has a billion page set of guidelines about exactly what you specifically can and cannot stream, so they could easily just say "no streaming game early unless you receive a key from us which will be done by complete random so that it is fair to all streamers". That way Twitch would also be able to reliably show viewers that the streamer received the game for free and streamers would be free to shit on the game.

He just played a pre release game last month for Allah's sake (PBUH). That stupid orc game that he gave a crap review to because it didn't cost enough or whatever came straight from the devs, allegedly.

How is everyone missing this. I understand the normies because why the hell would they watch him, but there are some serious DSPstorians here.

Yes, I don't see a big problem with that. You want your business to grow, you want people to watch your content if you are making videos. It is normal for this shit to happen. The thing is, will you be honest with your opinions or act as a marketing tool.
I think you can be critical, even when being supported by the people you are criticizing as long as you aren't an asshole about it.

But this isn't about being ethical regarding Phil. Like you already said and many others in this thread, this isn't Phil being a white knight and exposing the "evil shills". This is Phil being butthurt cause he was left out, no one gave him an invitation to the party and, Phil being Phil, he threw a tantrum over this and went after everyone because that's how Phil's world works. EVERYBODY is after him.

Because I don't think anyone really believes Phil's constantly changing narrative. I don't think people believe that Phil believes it himself either. People recognise that he's just jealous and trying to save face. This isn't the first time he's been a massive cunt and hypocrite, but it is the first time it seems to have blown up like this and really hurt him. Phil isn't worried about the things he's said before, all he thinks about is what makes him look good in the moment.

I get that. I just expected one of the first twitter responses to be along the lines of "dude you just shilled a month ago"

Also if you're wondering. His twitter silence was less than 24 hours, and him just making his twitter strictly professional with no personal tweets was also less than 24 hours. He just can't help it. I'm actually starting to think he may have a social media addiction? I mean he was already constantly tweeting on his break. I think he may have that thing with social media addiction where the attention is fulfilling to him and he thinks he has to say his thoughts and that people care what he thinks. The guy's hooked on Twitter now due to inflated self importance from the attention he gets about his uninteresting daily life routines that he tweets about.

People know he shills. I remember a lot of people getting butthurt over Phil getting an early copy of Dark Souls 3, including A German Spy that actually addressed it, how Phil got a early review copy and he didn't, even tho he had an intimate relation with FromSoft in the past with the development of the strategy guide for Souls 2 and Bloodborne.
DSP is a shill, he is just mad because he isn't shilling state of decay 2. But still, he is right. There are a lot of shills in the streaming/lp community.

The reason why he is getting so much backlash it's because he is saying an unpopular, undesirable truth.

People are confused on what exactly a shill is. A shill isn't just a person who gets a product for free & advertises/promotes it to a wider audience. To be a shill they must also mask their relationship to the company whose product they're promoting.

By virtue of getting the game & playing it before release date, the potential customer knows the relationship the streamer & the product. Additionally, all paid actors must give full disclosure.

Now, you may not like it, you may think it's bullshit. I may even agree with you. But it's not a shill.

Agreed, however the problem is that even though disclosure is implied by the streamer being able to actually play the game early, the details of how/why they were "chosen" to get that early game are not transparent.

If a company makes a shit game, gives it to a streamer and they praise it endlessly because that means they'll get more future games then that isn't really just a "free copy" or "promoting a game to a wider audience". Its a relationship based on implied trust. The developer trusts that the streamer will praise or at least not shit on their game "if they know what's good for them".

In that way, a streamer playing a game early can actually be a paid shill.

I agree with you that people should already know that there is some relationship behind the scenes, but I think its about as bullshit as review embargoes and all the other autism that goes on with reviews and previews nowadays.

Well, people use the term "shill" loosely. It tends to be associated with people providing positive reviews, even when the product isn't all that great or is pure garbage. Bias criticism to give a positive review for no other reason but to please the people who provided that person with a review copy. Make your "bosse" happy and he will continue to support you.

You see that shit in movies too, most recently, with shills like John Campea promoting the shitty Han Solo movie like his life depended on it.

Also Twitch has a service where you can include a link for people to buy the game via Amazon which gives you a referral fee for each sale. That is something that shouldn't even be allowed when its a pre-release playthrough.

That's your definition of a shill. According to Merriam-Webster a shill is "one who makes a sales pitch or serves as a promoter" which they are.

Holy shit, I didn't know that.
So yes, it is shilling, not in the classic sense, but this people are getting financial benefits from promoting games and being the first ones to get early copies.
Even with the implication of people knowing they got a direct copy from a dev, there is nothing stopping of giving favorable coverage, even if it is dishonest coverage, to please the dev and help get sales that will also benefit the streamer.

No wonder Phil is mad. He is being left out by big corporations.

From that very same Merriam Webster page:
1a : one who acts as a decoy (as for a pitchman or gambler)

Decoy, as in a hawker posing as a legit customer.

From Dictionary.com
1. a person who poses as a customer in order to decoy others into participating, as at a gambling house, auction, confidence game, etc.

From Wikipedia
A shill, also called a plant or a stooge, is a person who publicly helps or gives credibility to a person or organization without disclosing that they have a close relationship with the person or organization.

Oxford Dictionaries:
Definition of shill - an accomplice of a confidence trickster or swindler who poses as a genuine customer to entice or encourage others.

I don't make up my own definitions of words.
