I really think that although Chris enjoys being around people in a one sided way, I don't think he truly likes them because he does not understand them or what they want.

Edit: Okay, yeah, after reading that out loud, it's creepy as fuck.

Well when men say it to women it's typically used as a term of endearment/pet name like love, honey or sweetheart. (I'm from the UK and it's pretty common here)

Although it's also got platonic uses like in your example when it's family members talking to close relations or I guess some people just refer to everyone like that, it's the first time I've noticed Chris call someone darling though.
