A few thoughts on linux

Im just gonna say if you need to organize a shit ton of photos, Mac is the easiest. Organizing and filing shit on Windows is inconvenient.

Whats the Linux experience like?

I don't have constant updates like Windows did when I used it. That's one difference. If I want to actually use Windows things I have to install a Virtual Windows box.

Yeah the newer windows forces you to use their new Photos program rather than their older file viewer. It makes photos easy to edit, but its impossible to open more than one on the screen to scroll. I can see people using a Virtual Windows box just for that

Im just salty about that tbh

recompile your OS. If that doesn't work, switch distros, recompile, and then hang yourself for using linux

Having a great kernel doesn't matter when the OS it's built around is garbage. You should feel bad for using Windows, OP. Especially if you're the type to value security of information. You're giving everything away. At least try to pretend like you have some reasonable expectation to privacy.

The reason there are so many Linux Distros, is simply because most of them are tailored for a specific purpose, platform, or hardware, or are there as alternatives to less trustworthy (read: Canonical-made) ones. That's what you get with Open Source development, it's a more distributed means to an end, and as a result, less emphasis is put on turning your PC into a wiretap you use to watch cat videos. It's for the tech savvy, and while I can understand people not using it for that reason, there's no reason why a beginner can't use a Linux device, given the right distro. And, for what it's worth, Android is a Linux Distro.

I use a super trimmed down version of Windows 7, and Linux Mint. Both of those pretty much cover all bases when it comes to my needs. Windows 7 is the last version of Windows. Prove me wrong, you can't.

If your OS has more distros than there are genders in the tumblr lexicon, your OS is objectively shit.

Also the Windows kernel is objectively better.
I see you, you fucking nerd.

This is a screenfetch thread now.

Every OS has it's own uses. You wouldn't use a tractor on a drag race the same way you woudn't use Windows for a Tomcat server.

i used gentoo for years on my laptops. finally gave up just last week actually. i accidentally waited too long to update and deleted the program i needed to get online.....and update the rest of my system. i'm too old for that shit.

as @Gentle George said linux is only free if you time has no value.

Gentoo is a meme for ricers and people who value muh freedumbs over pretty much everything.

Linux is a great OS for certain types of tasks. When using Windows I have MSYS2 and cygwin pinned in my tray because I consider standard Linux utilities to be necessary for the things I do on a computer.

Thank god linux exists or when I fucked up my formatting I would not be able go get my files back. Debian is alright. I don't know anything about gentoo except that exceptional individuals seem to love it.

exactly. my work boxes need 2 functions really: web browsing and document creation, which for me means firefox or chrome on the one hand, and emacs, latex, and a pdf viewer on the other. tbh though after gentoo i don't think i've ever seriously considered another distro, esp one like ubuntu or other more "accessible" ones geared towards dummies. to me anyway gentoo gives you so much control there's just no reason to deal with a linux system without it.
