A series of unfortunate events - Are you satisfied with the end, or was there not enough despair

I thought this was just going to be about the books for some reason, 'cause the books are great, really great. People don't like the movie, I get it, but I personally enjoy it. Outside of Klaus, I thought the casting was just right (I seriously can't envision Count Olaf as anyone but Jim Carry), and I like the set designs. They moved things about, of course, and added things to it/took things away, but there was heart to it.

I should consider trying again, but I tried to watch the first episode ages ago, and I was so fucking bored that I turned it off before it ended. It just didn't feel right to me, and Patrick Warburton I think is too distracting because he's not Lemony Snicket to me. He just can't.

Anyway, this flew under everyone's radars, apparently:

I tried to like the Netflix Adaptation but I developed a deadly allergy to twee after Zooey Deschanel's New Girl. A Series of Unfortunate Events should be a sardonic Oliver Twist, not a dull, Bryan Fuller-inspired clusterfuck. On top of that, Neil Patrick Harris is no Jim Carrey. Hope it ended on a strong note, but the first two seasons were really lacking imo.

Love this series. Everything I wanted from a book adaptation. I'm two episodes away from finishing it. The ending for the books was gloriously bleak, but considering all the side stories we've seen playing out, I'm curious to see how this adaptation will conclude.

I honestly like the movie better sure it wasn't the best, but compared the series? Faithfulness doesn't make it good (it helps).

I loved the books when I was a kid, and I did enjoy the 2004 movie despite its flaws.

Despite what several people think of it, I also love the Netflix series. It's better than the movie but not as good as the books.

Clearly you have never heard of Hans Conried

Well shit, he is a good choice, indeed. Sadly, though, it's hard to overwrite a face and voice with another after repeated exposure without some massive editing magic.

If there's one question I want answered, it's the whereabouts of the Uncanny Valley and its cloning machine:

My siblings and I are big fans of the books (haven't finished the last one myself, but I really should), and we collectively hated the show. It felt too...zany? Like I know the books are zany but the books also had an extremely dry wit that wasn't felt in the show. The show felt like it was trying too hard to be wacky, especially with Neil Patrick Harris' Olaf. Olaf just doesn't feel threatening in this adaptation, not like the book or even the Jim Carrey version. Hell, we actually like the movie version. It felt a little closer to the book in terms of style and atmosphere.

That said, we stopped watching after the third episode of first season, so maybe it gets better but I'm not willing to sit through more of it.

It's like if Wes Anderson made a show, if you don't like his work you'll hate this show

I kind of like Warburton's voice and he has that mysterious look that fits Lemony Snicket. I just watched through the final season. It has a mushier ending.

I loved the books as a kid and I love the movie, partly for nostalgia and partly because I think there's legitimately good things in it. I was really wary of the Netflix adaptation, and after watching the first two seasons I didn't hate it but I still hold the movie in higher regards. Neil Patrick Harris just doesn't disappear into the role like Jim Carrey does and Patrick Warburton as Lemony Snicket doesn't work.
