Culture Activision Inexplicably Introduces Tool to Rate Character Diversity Metrics - Hahahahahaha woketard mad at retarded corpo virtue signalling

DiversitySpaceTool_Header.jpg

I don’t know if you have heard, but corporate oligarch Activision-Blizzard-King has an image problem when it comes to marginalized groups. Whether it’s about the decidedly cartoon villain-like actions of CEO Bobby Kotick, the labor lawsuit from California that seems to even involve the Governor acting improperly on the company’s behalf, or just more wild shit about Bobby Kotick, ABK doesn’t have a lot of reputation left to salvage.

So when the company desperately needs to make fundamental changes in how they hire and treat diverse employees and public-facing characters, I’d argue the solution is not in making and publicizing a tool that boils diversity design down to pre-defined metrics.

And yet, that’s kind of what King is doing according to a blog post published yesterday on Activision-Blizzard’s website. The thrust is that employees at King — by their own admission, working off-hours — created a tool that breaks down character attributes and rates them on how diverse they are. The idea, the post argues, is to guard “against unconscious bias and exclusion when it came to the creation of their games and characters.”

These metrics listed are culture, race, age, cognitive ability, physical ability, body type, facial features/beauty, gender identity, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic background.

Using Overwatch character Ana as the example, she has points in culture, race, age, physical ability, and gender identity. Essentially, the tool seems to start with the idea that a cis heterosexual white male character is the default and that factors away from that are essentially diversity points, which is a mildly problematic assumption to codify even if it tends to work out that way in practice. Ideally, decades of bad results should not create a default as much as they should be something to recognize as unnecessarily ubiquitous.

It’s…uncomfortable, a little bit. Chiefly because this seems like a bad idea as a failure of simpler, purer solution of simply hiring and listening to diverse designers. Getting them on a team is one thing, taking their feedback or letting them lead designs and teams is a different scenario, one that this tool only helps in the weirdest and most dystopian ways. Again, we’re focusing on quantifiable results rather than thinking about why those results are happening.

I don’t think this thing was created with malice, but it’s a tech solution around a problem that already has a solution. Diversity & Inclusion isn’t a vending machine that you keep popping effort tokens into until a badge that says “You can’t yell at me anymore” pops out. It’s a sustained process that requires people at all levels to listen to people that are trying to make themselves heard.

You can’t make “objectively” diverse games, you can only make games that come from diverse minds and cultures and experiences and let their design work do the talking.

The blog post adds that Sledgehammer’s Call of Duty: Vanguard and Blizzard’s Overwatch 2 have both already used the tool to general enthusiasm from those teams. So we’ll see how this actually works out in practice, but it’s a bit of a strange tool for an industry that largely already knows how to hammer a nail.

In case you didn't know, DiGRA, the Digital Games Research Association, is pretty much a cabal of progressive college activists who push for woke shit in video games through the realm of academia. I've been aware of them for like a decade now.
If I remember right, DiGRA is sort of pretend organization meant mostly for helping list papers so those involved can pretend they've been published by a reputable organization. A way of padding the resume since women's studies or sociology types can't produce anything of real value, so have to come up with ways of dressing up their work to pretend it's more professional than it really is.

Or at least that's how some people involved with it, who would name search DiGRA on twitter, tried explaining in the past how this was the case as a way of defending the organization against attacks.

I like how this tool is making everybody mad. Humans are mad because it's morally reprehensible in every sense of the term, and communists are mad because creating fictional Diversity Golems doesn't further their goal of wiping out the white race. This is a level of tone deaf that only a corporate exec who's beholden to ESG could possibly achieve.

Probably, like, three people, max, involved in this nonsense.

What I wonder, is if this will result in other game companies, and companies in general, using this same rating system to judge their characters and employees.
As stated in the original press release (subsequently removed by the damage control), the goal is "making the tool available to the industry as a whole". However, I have no doubt that this system is already in place at many large game companies to run on their projects and employees, just in a way that's unspoken or otherwise without explicit numbers. Consider Apex Legends, Rainbow Six Siege, and Battlefield 2042 as FPSs by other publishers that seem to have increasing inclination to make sure that new additions to their large casts of characters fill in some sort of woke sensibility. Or how the localized version of the Korean game Lost Ark infamously altered to skin tones for a variety of NPCs. Or how the new Saints Row game will have a diversity squad as its brand new main cast, representing the customizable player-character as a black woman in its marketing.

And then there's the matter of employees. Now more than ever, the progressive activists are demanding diversity hires, and this already happens explicitly in college admissions via affirmative action. What do you think the obligatory company Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion does, if not absolutely nothing? They probably compile demographic data on the existing employees and then urge HR and hiring managers to select applicants they feel are "underrepresented".

Somehow the chart implies that Zarya isn't lesbian. IDK what to do with that info, but it is weird to think that they resisted temptation to pull a JK Rowling and say that the character was gay all along.
Too stereotypical perhaps.
As explained in the GDC presentation, Zarya is left at the 0-score "norm" because she's technically ambiguous and is therefore presumed heterosexual, despite her visual "queer vibes". Therefore, the only video game characters who won't score 0 on "sexual orientation" are the very few who actually display some sort of romantic or sexual interest.

I suspect more than you that this "Diversity Space Tool" had more support from within the company than you indicate. Sure, only some people within the company were privy to its existence, hence tweets from Blizzard employees who claim to have never even heard of it. Activision-Blizzard (which includes King as well, thus ABK), is an incredibly large and compartmentalized company, even when it comes to individual projects such that a senior-titled employee will only know a fraction of what's going on.

So sure, a select team at King made the tool alongside a handful of MIT students. But recognize that the GDC presentation appears to have had positive reception from its audience, who I assure you are very woke, likely influencing the decision to make this press release with the expectation of further positive reception. The original press release also mentioned sharing the tool for testing with the teams for Call of Duty: Vanguard and Overwatch 2. Of course that doesn't mean everyone on those teams were notified, but those that did and participated in the testing are said to have reported back positively, including CoD: Vanguard "DE&I manager" Alayna Cole, who's quoted:
“We used [the Diversity Space Tool] to figure out what ‘more diversity’ looks like across all of our characters in both campaign multiplayer and Live seasons,” says Cole. “And now we’re going to use that data going forward into the next games that we’re working on.”

So no, I really don't think this is just clueless corporate execs trying to be woke. I think genuine diehard wokesters pervasive across the company were responsible.

And holy shit, McCree is still McCree.
There's a lot of merch with that name still on there. Halloween costumes and props in Halloween stores, and lego sets come to mind.

The people who care about diversity got exactly what they wanted, but they are still mad. They demanded they be pandered to, so corporations instilled frameworks to streamline the pandering.
The thing is, though, that’s not really what they want. They want corporations to bend over backwards to them so they feel important. Streamlining or codifying the process proves to them that they are all literally just nameless, faceless UNimportant mobs to these companies, and that makes them furious.

The whole thing is just stupid. And it's only now that several on Twitter are calling out how stupid diversity quotas are, which is sad.

Then again, you've got tweets like this one:

Hard to blame the right wingers in your companies when you fire anyone who expresses any remotely right-wing sentiment. These morons did it to themselves.

I went browsing around for more reactions from the progressive crowd out of curiosity. I think the replies and 1200+ quote tweets to this Twitter thread by Austin Walker, the lauded commie academic from Giant Bomb and VICE Waypoint, is a pretty good point of reference

I get the impression that they're really mad about this codification and ranking because it lays bare how absurd their activism over "diversity" is to everyone in a really simple way. They'll try to blame this on corporatism or capitalism or whatever, but I don't think there's any way to get around the fact that this is what their precious "intersectionality" and "progressive stack" amounts to. To run away from this as far as possible, it seems that the progressives are now emphasizing that the real solution is to get more diversity hires and give them free reign, the consultation grift that I mentioned before, but I can only imagine that their character designs would amount to the same thing, just without the explicit numbers as to hide the ball.

I also realized that Activision-Blizzard could very well run their employees and applicants through this very same system to make hiring decisions, especially with the activist clamor for diversity hires.

Don't get mad. This is the future you wanted. Diversity checklists everywhere. This is how you see everything. They just made a chart for it.

That Amari character shouldn't get so many age diversity points since she looks about 25 years south of her official age of 60. I get that she's just a waifu for guys who beat it to GMILFs. But I doubt she looks that good if she grew up in the desert.

Too bad she's straight. A 60 year old one eyed Muslim lesbian would have checked a lot of boxes. Even better if they made her a tranny. You dropped the ball. Try again.
Blizzard characters in 2023, designed under this model:

Her name is Mestawot Alemayehu, a 75 year old half-black quarter-jew quarter-chinese transgendered genderfluid-but-mostly-woman from Ethiopia (but she's culturally Somalian and is a Muslim.) She is pansexual, asexual, bisexual, and demisexual.

Mestawot grew up in complete poverty, subsisting on rats and other small animals, her parents died of starvation and she never went to school. She is autistic, and suffered from a traumatic brain injury at a young age, and was unfortunately born with a skin condition that makes her horrifically ugly.

Because of her intense trauma, which lead to being diagnosed with PTSD, she compulsively eats and now weighs 600lbs at 4'8. Because of her crippling weight gain she is now wheelchair bound. She has no special powers.

Diversity rating: 10/10

Now that's how you do it. Go big or go home.

Nah, just see Riot and the Philipines shebang.

Designed by a philipino, voice by a philipino, designed to represent their culture(?), people bitched because without context it apparently just looks like another white waifu bitch. SJWs are not a monolyth etc but it sure looks like it's very hard to win with them.

POC creators getting torched by people for not turning their characters into Tumblr stereotypes. Woketards need everything super obvious or they can't tell what it's supposed to be.This is because they are used to getting handed ugly diversity characters and everything they create themselves is bad tumblr art that checks all 437 diversity boxes. Make anything with features that don't look like racist cartoons from the 19th century and you're a bigot.

Did these faggots think being exploited by Capitalism as both an excuse AND as a demographic to sell things to didn't mean they wouldn't get quantified AT SOME POINT?

Like seriously, they're the objective definition of "history is doomed to repeat" first segregation now fucking racial science.
Inb4 phrenology becomes a thing.
Was about to say lobotomy but troononmy is basically the same thing just aimed at your cock.

I'm shocked the left hates this. It makes a way to use "the science" to determine diversity.

I don't even think it's because of optics because I refuse to believe they're self aware enough to realize how retarded this looks.
