Disaster Actor Julian Sands identified as hiker missing in Mt. Baldy area of Los Angeles since Friday

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Julian Sands, a British actor who has appeared in dozens of films and TV shows since the 1980s, is one of two missing hikers currently being searched for in Southern California's mountains, authorities confirmed Wednesday.
Sands has been missing since last week in the Mt. Baldy area. Family reported him missing on Friday evening.

According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department, severe weather on the mountain has been difficult and air resources have been limited.

"His wife did report him missing," said Gloria Huerta with SBCSD. "From what I understand, he left sometime that day for a hike and when he did not return, his family reported him missing."
Sands is known for roles in several films, including the 1985 feature "A Room with a View," "Warlock" and "Leaving Las Vegas."

Born in England, the 65-year-old now lives in the North Hollywood area.

Meanwhile, a separate search is ongoing for another hiker in Los Angeles County.
Bob Gregory, of Hawthorne, was reported missing by family on Monday afternoon. According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's San Dimas station, they've been searching for him in the Crystal Lake area of the San Gabriel Mountains.

Family says they are distraught and fear he may have hurt himself and fallen. They added the police are tracing his cell phone.

Search teams combed the area on the ground and from the air on Tuesday. However, those efforts were limited Wednesday to air crews only due to icy conditions on the tough terrain, authorities said.

"The conditions are too dangerous. In fact, even some of the more experienced hikers are getting themselves into trouble up there so we recommend that people to stay away from that area," said Huerta.

Well fuck. I always liked him. I hope he is found safe. He was great in Vibes.

I think that’s kind of the point. Being in the mountains is an experience and being alone in nature is almost spiritual. We have so little risk these days, and our lives are so cluttered and busy and overwhelmed with other people. To go off alone by yourself into the wilds, I can understand that. I’ve taken off for a few days alone several times, but I always carried food, water, tiny stove and a micro tent amd this was pre mobile days. I probably wouldn’t do it now as I’m not as fit as I was when I was younger but as a young un, I did.
I get that. I really do. But you need to be smart and safe about it, especially when you're older like this actor. Having at least one other person around may ruin some of the solitude, but you need it for safety.

Especially if you're traveling in rough and/or high-altitude terrain like he is. A partner can literally mean the difference between life and death when there's an accident.

And if someone absolutely insists on going alone for whatever reason, they sell various GPS devices that can not only tell you where you are if you get lost, but can be tracked by someone if you go missing. And a lot of them even have a 'Distress' option that can be turned on to tell someone you need help.

I feel for the guy. We've actually had to get after my grandpa for going on unscheduled hikes alone without telling anyone.

But he was irresponsible here, should've known better, and it may have cost him his life.

Late update; article is from a couple weeks ago. However, it seems they're still looking for the old boy. His poor family.

Julian Sands' Son Says He's 'Realistic' About Search for Actor 3 Months After His Disappearance

The actor's son Henry Sands said he has the "deepest gratitude for the love and support my family and I have received" amid his father's disappearance

Julian Sands' son is speaking out about his expectations for the actor to be found, over three months after his dad went missing.

Speaking with U.K. outlet The Times for an interview published Friday, Henry Sands said he is "of course, realistic about the impact on the search of the weather conditions over the last three months — it's been a 40-year snowfall record in California."

Sands, 65, was first reported missing on Jan. 13 by his wife Eugenia Citkowitz after he set out to hike the San Bernardino County-area Mount Baldy.

Searches for the actor's whereabouts remain ongoing, and have been impacted by significant amounts of inclement weather across the region in recent weeks.

Despite Sands not being found as of yet, Henry told The Times, "I am hugely appreciative for all the efforts made so far from the volunteer search and rescue climbers and the San Bernardino county sheriff team to bring my father home."

"There is nothing really further to say at this point other than to reinforce my deepest gratitude for the love and support my family and I have received," he also said.

Henry added that he "look(s) forward to the search resuming as soon as the weather improves and the ground conditions are safe and feasible to do so."

On Jan. 24, the actor's brother Nick Sands told the U.K.'s Craven Herald & Pioneer that he believed Julian, who he said he was scheduled to meet with for a family event on Jan. 30, is "gone."

"He has not yet been declared missing, presumed dead, but I know in my heart that he has gone," he told the outlet at the time. "However, sibling rivalry being what it is, it would be just like him to walk out of there and prove me wrong."

On Feb. 10, San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department public information officer Gloria Huerta told PEOPLE that "we remain hopeful but know the outcome may not be what we would like" regarding ongoing searches for the actor.

John Malkovich brought further attention to Sands' disappearance on Feb. 20 when he spoke about his friendship with his fellow actor ahead of premiere of their film at Berlin Film Festival.

"I'm a godfather to his first son from his first marriage to Sarah, who I know very well," Malkovich, 69, explained to reporters, according to Deadline. "I introduced him to his second wife, and we have been close since we met in 1993 on the set of The Killing Fields."

"It's a very sad event," Malkovich said of Sands' disappearance at the time, according to the outlet.

Hoping against hope he's not dead but......
Unless he's been kidnapped by the hills have eyes style mountain hobos he has to be dead at this point. I suspect its going to be one of those situations where the cops never find him and it'll be some hiker or mountain climber that stumbles across whats left of his body by chance 5 - 10 years from now

Happens alot with hunters out with their dogs with dumped bodies in wooded areas and such

people don't know how wild the wilderness is, and how damn easy it is to disappear forever (or at least for decades) - the death valley germans and Bill Ewasko (they finally found his remains) were in a desert and still took forever to find; innawoods and you could be gone for good; though ID and other plastics can take forever to break down.

I know, and yet there is something wonderful about solitude in nature. I’ve been on plenty of solo walks and camping trips and it’s always been a very deep experience.
I hope he didn’t suffer. Man Vs nature is something very profound for us, and sometimes nature comes out on top.

I didn't know they found Bill Ewasko, do you have a link?

D.B. Cooper's still missing, despite the fact you stand to make a couple of thousand dollars if you find him.....

Despite going down in the Sahara where there's literally nothing but sand, the B-25 bomber Lady Be Good wasn't found for 15 years, even when she was sitting on the surface in the open, and that's just the plane. They still haven't found all her crew that were known to have survived the crash and left deliberate markers to follow....

A bloke named Harold Holt disappeared while swimming in Australia in 1967 and hasn't been found yet. Oh, and he wasn't some random yokel, either. He was the God Damned Prime Minister.

Reminds me that several years back a lost hiker wandered into Suzanne Somers property and she wasn't like "GTFO!!" she spoke to him normally like "Oh hello, who are you, you're lost" kind of way and her husband helped escort him on the way out.

I assume Julian suffered disorienting or something but most likely heat stroke. Even the most experienced outdoorsman can die outside.

Harold Holt was kidnapped by a Russian sub and taken to China. It was a Communist plot against the free world!

But no, an inquest found that the sea that day was very rough, there was a big swell and Holt wildly over estimated his ability to handle the conditions. He was actually with several other people who refused to enter the water because it looked dangerous. While very active, Holt was aging and his health wasn't great. Going by what the witnesses saw when he went under, there's a good chance he had a heart attack. The open sea is indescribably massive and when someone is lost and found in it, it's almost a miracle. There are also infinite amounts of animals in there who'd be only too happy to make a meal out of you.

A man called Dane Kowalski went missing in the South Australian outback in 2015. Huge, huge search, unsuccessful. Some local workers randomly tripped over him and his 4x4 four months later. Poor unlucky bastard got bogged in sand, and was bitten by a snake when he tried to free the vehicle. Extremely painful and lonely death. At least it was quicker than dying of heatstroke and dehydration, I suppose.

It’s like the entirety of both Australian wildlife and Australian landscape exists solely to kill you.
Obligatory:

Anyone who is doing serious outdoors activity alone or with a small group should purchase a PLB or similar - https://www.sportys.com/blog/plbs-vs-iridium-satellite-difference/ - the newest iPhone has something similar embedded in it - https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT213426

If you can afford a vehicle that can get you far enough from rescue that you could die, you can afford a PLB. Still might not save you from death by Australia, though.

And let various people know where you are going, when you are expected to return, and your planned route; and if you get into trouble stay with the vehicle! Signal flares or other ways to make noticeable smoke/fire are also recommended. Most of the civilized world will put extensive efforts to find a lost adventurer; make it easy for them.
