Adam West Dies at 88 - There goes childhood

Adam West — an actor defined and also constrained by his role in the 1960s series “Batman” — died Friday night in Los Angeles. He was 88. A rep said that he died after a short battle with leukemia.

“Our dad always saw himself as The Bright Knight, and aspired to make a positive impact on his fans’ lives. He was and always will be our hero,” his family said in a statement.

With its “Wham! Pow!” onscreen exclamations, flamboyant villains and cheeky tone, “Batman” became a surprise hit with its premiere on ABC in 1966, a virtual symbol of ’60s kitsch. Yet West’s portrayal of the superhero and his alter ego, Bruce Wayne, ultimately made it hard for him to get other roles, and while he continued to work throughout his career, options remained limited because of his association with the character.

He is survived by his wife Marcelle, six children, five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

A few years back I met Adam West at my local comic con.

I had barely enough money for an autograph - yet he gave me one because, so he said, he liked me. He was a damned nice guy.

RIP to the greatest live action Batman, a man who knew how to play camp to the hilt by taking everything completely seriously.

God bless him.

RIP Adam West.

You were one hell of a Batman. And Catman.

Ngl I'm surprised he was still alive, but I forgot he was still under 90--still sucks he didn't die of natural causes :c. Hope he still went peacefully.

I never grew up watching the '60s Batman, though I've caught episodes here and there. I probably do know him best as Catman and young Mermaid Man, but he was everywhere. So in a way, I still grew up with him, even if it was just his voice.

He's probably glad to see his old friends and fellow actors again and playing catch up with them. Once Burt Ward goes (he's going to be the last to leave us), they can all have a reunion party and make a new Batman episode for old time's sake.

Thanks, Adam West. Godspeed.

Adam West did a lot of work and put a lot of love into everything he did. He was in several cartoons as various voices (including a Batman one for an episode), and I always loved hearing his voice. I'm going to miss him.
