Two things recently happened. One of my study buddies, who I hadn't heard of on a long time (he went on to do a Phd) Was hospitalized. He had abused adderall and had heart palpitations while not sleeping for three days.

After that I started looking about aderall, and apparently in writing circles it was a big thing, with even Joe Rogan saying they are passed like candy in journo circles.

Rogan says he watched a lot of YouTube videos of Adderall users, "who thought the whole world was against them, that they were super-competent, capable of anything. They had unstoppable confidence. They wouldn't shut the fuck up. But everyone was against them."

Then, Rogan says: "A lot of people are on it.... It's a spooky drug... First of all, journalists. I have a buddy of mine who's a writer who said almost all journalists are on it." One of the other guys says, "You get stuff done." And Rogan muses, "But it changes who you are as a person. It fucks with your head."

I like to know when someone I'm listening to is on drugs. If I don't know, and they are, they are stealing from me. That's how I see it. I'm not talking about people with a genuine mental disorder who take a prescribed drug that's supposed to get them to the medical profession's idea of normal. I respect their privacy. But somebody taking drugs to get a lot of writing done? I want a warning before I spend some of my life's precious time absorbing their addled — Adderalled — verbiage.

And also the New Yorker did a piece. Which you can google if you are interested. But it was funny that the term "NEUROENHANCEMENT" was created to avoid phrasing it as "getting high on amphetamins". That's my quetsion to you? Does it work to make you smarter? Or is it like coke, where the drug makes you think you are good looking, smart and capable?

I had a friend in high school who got prescribed adderall for ADD. I don't know if it was just his brain chemistry or something, but I remember it made him super fucking depressed to the point of being suicidal. And I don't think it was an act or anything, because as soon as he got off it, he went back to normal.

Make of that, what you will.

I've heard about that being the case a long time ago, like pre-2010ish, but good luck getting a prescription today if you weren't given one as a child.

That can happen if you really start overdoing it, and it does get tempting at times to take more than you need when you're just having an unproductive day. You should also take breaks every once in a while to let your body and mind relax and decompress for a little bit. Just like with everything else, it's fine as long as you don't go wild.

It's not meth, which is short for methamphetamine, but just regular amphetamine instead. Like THC, it can cause psychosis more easily in susceptible people, even at pharmaceutical dosages for ADHD. I know someone who was on a normal dose for ADHD for years and became low-level psychotic the whole time as a result. Because he was an eccentric to begin with due to schizotypal personality disorder, nobody noticed for quite a long time.

To my knowledge, he never did. I remember him telling me it never really helped him focus and I don't think he liked taking it. But it was a long time ago and I might be remembering wrong.

When I was on adderall in high school, I was an even bigger sperg and couldn't eat. It got to the point I had hunger pains but food made me sick. Legitimately one of the worst feelings I've ever had.

yeah afaik it's more like the clean meth used by fighter pilots

They used to prescribe it as "pep pills" and "diet pills" for housewives too lol

Yeah if anyone has ever read or seen Requiem for a Dream one of the characters basically gets hooked on it as a weight loss supplement, absolutely grim.
