Actually I'm quite competent in Spanish, certainly moreso than Phil, and can tell it from Italian, though since Spanish and Italian (and, for that matter, Portuguese, Romanian, French, Occitanian, Romansch, Haitian Kreyòl, Galician, Corsican, Catalan, Sicilian, Ladino/Judeo-Espanyol, etc) all descend from Latin, there are plenty of cognates.
I'm more concerned by the fat that Phil can't tell the difference between Mexico and Puerto Rico, or, for that matter, Spain and the entirety of Latin America.
Also, Phil stole the surname Araújo without knowing how to pronounce it, or that it's a Galician surname that's as much Portuguese as it is Spanish at this point. Of course it was spread by white Catholic Crusaders and Conquistadors who slaughtered Moors, Jews and Indians, so it would naturally appeal to a white guy like Phil.
