An advocate with a blossoming career influencing public policy was stabbed to death by an unhinged stranger while waiting for a Brooklyn bus early Monday on the way home from a wedding with his girlfriend, police sources said.

Ryan Carson worked as the senior solid waste campaign director at the nonprofit New York Public Interest Research Group. In 2021, separate from his NYPIRG work, he walked 350 miles across New York State to pressure then-governor Andrew Cuomo into legalizing safe drug injection sites throughout New York.

“One of the rising stars in our organization,” said a shaken Blair Horner, executive director of NYPIRG. “Wonderful person, hard-working, loud boisterous laugh. Everybody loved him.”

Carson, 32, spearheaded the 2021 “No OD NY” campaign. The initiative saw Carson and supporters walk from City Hall in Manhattan to Buffalo, with stops in Albany and other cities. He raised more than $20,000 for the campaign through a successful GoFundMe.

“I don’t think it’s at all an exaggeration to say that it’s a big loss for the city,” Ari Farrell, a friend of the victim, said of Carson’s slaying. “Anybody in his personal life will tell you he’s one of the best, the most moral, they’ve ever met.”

Carson cowrote a 2021 Daily News op-ed “New York falters on fentanyl and the opioid crisis,” which accused Cuomo of touting his handling of the COVID epidemic while ignoring the spread of fentanyl throughout the state.

He was waiting with his girlfriend at the B46 bus stop on Malcolm X Blvd. near Lafayette Ave. in Bedford-Stuyvesant after taking the Long Island Rail back from a wedding when a belligerent stranger started knocking over scooters parked nearby about 3:50 a.m., cops said.

“What are you looking at?” the man snarled at the startled couple before stabbing Carson twice in the chest, according to cops.

Medics rushed Carson to Kings County Hospital but he couldn’t be saved. He was about a mile from his apartment when he was stabbed.

His killer ran off and is on the loose.

Carson was set to turn 32 on Friday and friends were planning a birthday bash.

“There’s a big party on Saturday,” said Bucky Illingworth, 31, Carson’s roommate. “It was gonna be here and then we were gonna go for a hike in a week or two.”

Illingworth described Carson, who was 6-foot-4, as “the friendliest giant ever.”

“Always down to meet new friends, cook, always had a beer for you,” Illingworth added.

Following the fentanyl-related overdose death of a 1-year-old boy at a Bronx day care last month, NYC Health Commissioner Ashwin Vasan called the synthetic opioid the most dangerous threat to New Yorkers’ health since COVID.

“I’m passionate about safe injection facilities because I’ve seen family members become addicted to opioids prescribed for pain caused by their occupations,” Carson wrote in the 2021 GoFundMe. “I’ve lost friends and family to the opioid epidemic, including my best friend, who died of a heroin overdose in 2016.”

On Point NYC would later open the first safe injection sites in the country in Washington Heights and East Harlem with the city’s blessing in November 2021. Safe injection sites remain illegal on the state and federal levels.

Carson enjoyed sports and attending concerts with friends.

“He was a huge basketball fan, Celtics fan, Red Sox fan,” Carson’s roommate said. “He loved music. We went to shows together all the time.”

Again, I remind you, you're not a widow! Or hot, for that matter.
How long after he "died suddenly" do you think she banged someone else? I bet she's on dating apps in Boston, NYC, Philly, Cape Cod, Bridgewater, etc (yep, these are all the places she has visited on the GoFundMe's dime)! I wonder how much his parents hate her...

It's obviously one of those "former industrial buildings turned into flats" arrangements--you know, places that draw people like this like a cow pie draws flies. It's probably as much for sound baffling as to try and make it 'fit' with the rest of the ceiling. I imagine that room needs all the help it can get to not be obnoxious with echoes and whatnot from all the hard surfaces. I'm honestly more weirded out by those slipshod metal/plastic panels along the back wall, like the wall stopped there originally for ventilation purposes (or maybe machinery, IDFK) and rather than spend any real money or make it look nice, the developer just slapped whatever the fuck they could find scrap over the gap and called it good. This place is so sketch I wouldn't take it for a night if it were a motel room, let alone pay money to call it home. Fucking hive people, man...

I think the media hivemind has decided that this "tragedy" is something to move beyond. Optics too bad. Bury it in a soy encrusted biodegradable coffin.

I'm guessing this fine, upstanding example of American womanhood is having a difficult time accepting that and is throwing the adult female version of a toddler's temper tantrum in response. The only people who will give her attention for her antics at this point are right wingers on Twitter, so ... let's do things to stay front and center with at least them.

This is apt and probably true. After all, though she'd hate to admit it even after witnessing someone murder her boyfriend in front of her, NYC is more crime ridden than ever. Events like this are a dime a dozen.

She spent all of Thanksgiving sadposting on Twitter. She's a terrible writer and absolutely pathetic.

A man who was charged with murder in the fatal stabbing of an activist on a Brooklyn street in 2023 has pleaded guilty to the killing, which prosecutors called “random and unprovoked.”

The man, Brian Dowling, 20, appeared on Wednesday before Justice Danny K. Chun of State Supreme Court in Brooklyn and accepted an offer of 20 years to life in prison in exchange for the guilty plea in the death of the activist, Ryan Carson, 32. He will be sentenced on Feb. 19, according to a news release from the Brooklyn district attorney’s office.

Mr. Dowling’s lawyer did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Claudia Morales, Mr. Carson’s girlfriend, said that the plea represented the “end of a very long journey.”

“There was relief in knowing that part was over, but it is also never going to be over,” she said.

Mr. Carson was a well-known community organizer who worked as a campaign manager for the New York Public Interest Research Group and ran an advocacy campaign to end drug overdose deaths. He also wrote poetry.

His murder was met with an outpouring of grief from advocates and elected officials.

“This tireless defender of his neighbors was stolen from us,” Chi Ossé, a city councilman who represents Bedford-Stuyvesant and Crown Heights, said on X. His funeral in Massachusetts, where he grew up, “felt like a funeral for a senator,” Assemblywoman Emily Gallagher, who represents a North Brooklyn district and was a friend of Mr. Carson’s, told The New York Times.

Mr. Carson and his girlfriend were sitting on a bus stop bench on Malcolm X Boulevard in Bedford-Stuyvesant just before 4 a.m. on Oct. 2, 2023, when a man, later identified as Mr. Dowling, walked past them and began kicking parked scooters, the police said. The couple stood up and began walking in his direction when the man suddenly turned and started yelling at them.

According to prosecutors, there was “clear” video footage of the fatal encounter, which showed Mr. Dowling shouting “I’m going to kill you” just before swinging a knife at Mr. Carson, who was trying to de-escalate the situation.

When Mr. Carson tripped and fell while backing away, Mr. Dowling stabbed him three times, including once in the heart, the police said.

The police said Mr. Dowling had kicked Mr. Carson and threatened his girlfriend as he lay on the sidewalk, bleeding out. They also said that a woman who seemed to be Mr. Dowling’s girlfriend was seen with him on the street before the stabbing and appeared at the scene soon after, calling Mr. Dowling by name and apologizing to the couple.

Mr. Dowling threw the knife, but returned to retrieve it moments later, prosecutors said, adding that investigators had later found it hidden under some greenery nearby.

Mr. Dowling surrendered later that week. A search of his apartment turned up numerous knives with handles similar to the murder weapon and clothes matching what the killer was wearing in the video, according to prosecutors.

“Many of us still shudder when recalling the horrific video showing this defendant viciously attacking Ryan Carson and stabbing him to death for no reason at all,” Eric Gonzalez, the Brooklyn district attorney, said. “Ryan was passionate about making our city a better place, and I hope that today’s outcome will bring his loved ones a small sense of closure.”

Wait, I thought de-escalation worked and was the preferred tactic?
