I’m pretty sure he straight up doesn’t have a way to rule out related questions, which is why you still get FNAF questions after saying no to “Is your character from FNAF?” and still get questions about subscribers after saying no to “Is your character a famous YouTuber?”
He really is just a more advanced form of a checklist, every question is just marking another thing off but only on the character, and not in general. It remembers the terms that have applies to characters in the database but not any of the specific questions you've answered which would make sense as to why it repeats them. Why it's gotten so bad at doing this fairly simple task is beyond me.
Just tried to have it guess Sinamoi from Dead Island 1, not a highly obscure character but not one most could think of. Holy shit is this thing retarded now, it kept asking if my character was wearing a hat and constantly asked anime-related questions until it asked if the character was white (lol). It did end up getting multiple characters from Dying Light and looked like it was going to go for Sam B. from the same game, so it wasn't all that far off, but after about 80 questions it should have gotten a lot closer. They've definitely changed the way it works, it didn't ask questions relating to anything remotely taboo, like tattoos, drug use or violence beyond asking "can/do they fight".

This thing used to be like Nardwuar levels of knowledgeable. Now I tried to get it to guess "The jews" and after all the questions it just gave me a Latina porn star.
It seems pretty random these days, sometimes he'll still guess accurate and sometimes he'll be hopelessly lost with a character that isn't THAT obscure.
Wow it's utterly retarded.
I remember last time I played this character, I was done in 30 or so, with no stupid questions and several "not sures". It did take risky assumptions back then, but I assume that was to have a chance to make it in 20 questions in an ever-expanding domain.

THREE questions about the hat (granted, it's quite a remarkable hat)
I also got Harlock in 30 questions, with "been to space" and "has an eyepatch" (but also, bizarrely, "linked with the Kardashians", after it's been well-established he's from an animu), Kodai Susumu (the Yamato guy) in 33, and Yuki Mori while thinking of Emeraldas.
Couldn't get any other Matsumoto character. Tetsuro doesn't appear to be in the dataset, although I know he used to.
(all this after it's established the character is fictional)
"does your character fight with a sword? (yes)..... does your character own a sword?
"is your character linked with anarcho-capitalism? is your character linked with the 2016 presidential election?"
"is your character human? (no) is your character Swiss? (lol)"
"Has your character worked at Tallinn University?
"Has your character known you as a baby?"
"Does your character often fall during streams?"
"Is your character dating a member of Super Junior?"
"Does your character live in Sofia?"
"Does your character has a Billie Eilish fan account?"
"Is your character part of the Green Party of Aotearoa?"
"Does your character develop UWP apps?"
"Have you ever slept with your character?" (I'd said it was a cartoon animal cat which didn't walk on two legs and didn't speak)
"Is your character's mother also your mother?"
"Were your character's parents killed by orphans ?" (what?)
Then I tried Joshua Conner Moon, Kiwifarms Admin And Hater Of The English (male, real, streamer, probably not famous because of youtube, probably linked to cats, sexy):
Q 26. Is your character part of the reptilian army?
I’m pretty sure he straight up doesn’t have a way to rule out related questions, which is why you still get FNAF questions after saying no to “Is your character from FNAF?” and still get questions about subscribers after saying no to “Is your character a famous YouTuber?”
It's supposed to be a balanced decision tree. There's a rather simple algorithm where at each stage you calculate
- the probability of each character in the database, given previous answers (and maybe the characters' popularity, including by region and time of day), and
- which question will give you the most information (cuts the domain in half)
and ask that.
You also have to collect information by asking questions which will not win you this round but add to the body of knowledge, and add randomization for replay value.
If everyone makes his best effort to answer questions, the dataset will be self-correcting even as it grows. Someone makes an honest mistake, it gets corrected by future players. Someone submits a retarded question ("Does your character has a Billie Eilish fan account?"), you ask it a bunch of times and see the answer is always no - meaning, asking it is useless - and stop asking it.
(This is all number-crunching. There's no need for the program to understand natural language, categories, real vs fictional, book vs tv, live action vs animated, etc. It also automatically accounts for persistent conflicting answers and will not seek a definite answer as applied to a particular character.)
As for the current sad state of the dataset, I suspect it's been poisoned by random answers, duplicate characters, and to a lesser extent retarded questions - so it can't tease out that fictional characters (for the most part) do not have subscriber counts, because some cockmonglers keep answering "yes". There's bugs, too, I can't submit a duplicate character report. A real shame, it used to be a fun project.
So i tried to do Sir Eldric IV , really obscure flash game youtuber with under 10k subs, He failed to give me him but did throw up Ross Scott as his last guess. Next i tried Pippa and it got her 2nd try which wasn't too shocking, i noticed it didn't run around in circles as much as with Eldric, so i think it isnt really dumb as much as its burdened by nearly a decade worth of characters and questions that the mods seemingly can't/won't clean out, if they did do some spring Cleaning it might work better. Last thing i tried was a Ford Falcon XB GT and it got it first try, which shocked me since none of the questions seemed to directly lead to it, no questions about movies or chases, it did repeat questions about japan twice though.
Akinator got worse? I tried it at around last year and it was a hit and miss. It seems to pick after mainstream characters more often speaking from experience. But I never got those stupid questions like "tilt the whoa".
Akinator has been turning into a dementia patient over the years.
"Is your character from FNAF?"
No
"Is your character from a cartoon?"
Yes
"Is your character from a game?"
No
"Is your character a member of Fazbear's Pizza?"
...no
"Is your character a member of a band?"
........no
"Is your character Roxanne Wolf?"
no
Reading your post I remember the feeling I got when trying it in my previous post. My feeling was that based on the questions, and if Akinator was a real person, I would politely make up an excuse and go somewhere else.
Tried it again right now and he correctly guessed it was Tove Jansson(creator of Moomin) without it getting creepy(Tove was a lesbian, Moomin doesn't wear clothes).
Every time it asks something specific and correct that would've made me think "oh shit he knows" back when it worked, it's now followed by several questions about irrelevant zoomer garbage, a question I've already answered a few times, and a wrong guess. RIP.

In all seriousness, I think it's a result of a bloated infobase it has to work with. There's too many characters obscure or no that are added to this game and so it has to rely on trends and algorithms in order to keep up. I can't really blame the developer for why this thing is declining mentally and I can't really blame anyone at all honestly it's just not built for a massive repository of characters or things.
Edit: What the FUCK kind of question is this?
Is this thing going to ask me "does this character breathe oxygen next?"

Asking if a character breathes oxygen could be helpful in ruling out machines or some aliens. But I have no fucking clue how asking about their beliefs in gravity can get it closer to the answer.
