Alcoholism General

A friend of mine holidays often, and will get shitfaced drunk every night he's away. We're talking quadruple vodkas, pounding bottles of wine, shots, all of it.

He will also do this every weekend, and occasionally during the week (shift worker.)

I've never considered him an alcoholic, though I guess he technically would be, if not heading there very soon.

Anything I should do as a concerned friend?

You could tell them you're concerned, but there's really not much you can do. It's one of those things people have to figure out on their own. I'm going on 7 years sober and trust me, people tried to get me to quit earlier.

I was at a meeting celebrating two people with long-term recovery. One had 40 years and the other had 37 years. There were 43 people in the room and the person with 40 years said that only 7 of the 43 would get long-term recovery like that. They went on to say that a handful would be dead or in prison within a year. A year later, 3 were dead and 6 more were doing hard time.

It took me 14 years of using and a chunk of hard time hanging over my head, plus probation, testing, restitution, fines, fees, and court-mandated counseling, to get into long-term recovery.

Get yourself some hard time or the promise of hard time plus a whole bunch of other stuff and maybe you'll get there. Good luck.

There are few families on Earth where alcohol hasn't caused problems, one way or another. Sure has in my family.

Couple of weeks ago was at the liquor store getting lottery tickets when this man came in, wanting to get some cold beer. Clerk asked him to leave since when he drinks he gets all shitfaced, collapses, etc. Man put the beers back and left, politely. Later saw him walking around town trying to find somewhere that would sell him the brew. He doesn't live far from me, once begged some change. From what I have heard man has had problems with drugs and alcohol. Doesn't seem to have a job, guess he lives off his wife.

Next month will be 34 years since the last drink. One of the best things I have ever done. Just walked away cold. Never drank that much to start with.

Best tip - don't drink, don't start. If you drink, stop. Can literally be a life-saver. If you don't want to stop for yourself, stop for your family, especially if you have kids. Set the example, save the money for their needs. Improved health means you'll be around longer for your kids. And while you're at it, once free from alcohol, then if you smoke stop the tobacco. Harder to do than dropping alcohol but even more benefits.

I'm surprised how cheap it actually is to be an alchy. How tf do you go broke from this? It's like 10 bucks a day and you stay buzzed for hours.

I used to have a really bad problem with alcohol and it began to consume my life - got so bad I had to go to the ER because I thought I was having a heart attack/stroke (I wasn't, but the panic after going on a 5 day binge and not sleeping is insane). I managed to white knuckle a few years of sobriety but then I found Kratom. It scratches that itch that my brain has of taking something after work to unwind and relax, it gives that feeling of euphoria/wellbeing similar to how a few drinks used to make me feel. It's been instrumental for me in staying sober and it's worth a shot looking into if you are struggling and can't find anything that works. You don't get any kind of hangovers and if you use an American Kratom Assosciation vendor that tests their kratom for purity/heavy metals it really helps in getting good quality Kratom. Don't get that gas station shit, order it online.

I recommend Red Maeng Da capsules (Kratom usually comes in powder but it tastes like ass, if you can stomach it fine but I use capsules) and doing some research on it. I haven't really noticed too many side effects and I've been on it for about a year and some change. It can be habit forming and there are some mild withdrawals if you're doing high amounts (10grams + a day) that involve insomnia and restless legs, but it's very much worth checking out. I actually tried drinking alcohol a few months ago and was almost repulsed by how dirty it felt by comparison - and the hangover the next day fucking sucked. I straight up don't want to drink alcohol anymore after finding Kratom, and while some people will say I traded one addiction for another - maybe. But alcohol was killing my body and destroying my career, relationships, and weight. Kratom doesn't really do any of that.

May not work for everyone but I wish someone had told me about this plant years ago. And obviously this goes without saying but if you have a system that works for you already to stay sober don't fuck with it.

If any of you autists want to attend your first AA meeting, PM me.
After attending AA for years, one of the "old timers" finally told me "the secret." He looked around the room and in a hushed voice he said to me,

"It's real simple. Just don't drink."

That was over 15 years ago. Never attended another AA meeting. Still haven't had a drink.

You're welcome.
