Alec Baldwin's 'prop firearm' kills one, injures another

  • 🔧 At about Midnight EST I am going to completely fuck up the site trying to fix something.

Actor Alec Baldwin discharged a "prop firearm" that killed a cinematographer and injured a the director of the movie Rust, being filmed on a set south of Santa Fe, a county sheriff's office spokesman said late Thursday.

Halyna Hutchins, 42 and the director of photography for the movie, died at University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque. The film's director, Joel Souza, was hospitalized in Santa Fe, Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office spokesman Juan Ríos said.

A source closed to the investigation said Baldwin, 63, was questioned by investigators late Thursday and was seen by a New Mexican reporter and photographer in tears.

Investigators are still trying to determine if the incident was an accident, Ríos said. No charges have been filed, and the investigation remains open, Ríos wrote in a news release.

The prop was fired at Bonanza Creek Ranch, where filming was underway, the sheriff's office said in an early evening news release. Baldwin stars in the production.

Hutchins died from her injuries after she was flown to University of New Mexico Hospital, according to the sheriff's office. Souza was taken to Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center, where he is receiving emergency care, the sheriff's office said. Attempts to get comment from Baldwin were unsuccessful.

“We received the devastating news this evening, that one of our members, Halyna Hutchins, the Director of Photography on a production called ‘Rust’ in New Mexico died from injuries sustained on the set,” John Lindley, the president of the International Cinematographers Guild Local 600, and Rebecca Rhine, the executive director, said in a statement, as reported by Variety. “The details are unclear at this moment, but we are working to learn more, and we support a full investigation into this tragic event. This is a terrible loss, and we mourn the passing of a member of our Guild’s family.”

Deputies were investigating how the accident occurred and "what type of projectile was discharged," the sheriff's office said in an earlier news release.

Rust Movie Productions did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Filming for Rust was set to continue into early November, according to a news release from the New Mexico Film Office. It's described as the story of a 13-year-old boy left to fend for himself and his younger brother following the death of their parents in 1880s Kansas, with New Mexico doubling for Kansas.

Guns firing blanks have been blamed for deaths in past movie productions. Online Hollywood news site Deadline reported, "Actor Jon-Erik Hexum was killed Oct. 18, 1984, on the set of the TV series Cover Up when he accidentally shot himself in the head with a gun loaded with blanks. And in 1993, Brandon Lee, the son of martial arts legend Bruce Lee, died after he was shot in the head by a gun firing blanks on the set of The Crow. Both incidents were determined to have been accidents."

This is a developing story and will be updated.

I'm assuming it wasn't a cap-and-ball revolver because there are are so many mentions of live rounds. But if it was, then it changes some things.
Like I guessed earlier in the thread, the news has verified the firearm was an 1873 Colt Single Action Army. There were 3 identical pistols on set for him to use. Sorry if this double posts but editing in a quote is beyond my forum capabilities.

So Agent 47 played the shell game with those guns.

You have to:

1) Insert the quote into the reply box.
2) Click the three dots for More Options.
3) Toggle off BBCode.
4) Copy and paste the quote into your edit.
5) Toggle BBCode back on.

A bit cumbersome.

I would feel bad for Baldwin if I wasn't sure that if Larry The Cable Guy shot someone Baldwin would be pointing and laughing at him.
Bit off topic but looking up Larry the Cable Guy and turns out he isn't very political at all, he voted for Gary Johnson in 2016 and the last comment on politics he had was 'Everyone's sick of that stuff'. So right now wondering if an idiot has ever tried to cancel him or boycott him thinking he is some die-hard Trump supporter that always carries around his AK-47.

Hannah Gutierrez Reed, the armorer on the set of "Rust" where the cinematographer was accidentally shot and killed last week, may need to look for a new home.

The "Rust" armorer’s landlady revealed on Tuesday she’s kicking out the 24-year-old because she "doesn’t want her living there anymore."

Reed’s home in Bullhead City, Arizona, is a two-bedroom property close to the Colorado River. Property websites estimate the home, built in 1978, is worth $190,000.
Landlady is a dick. Is it the unwanted publicity or an irrational hatred of guns? Now to "why not both?" Girl with a report.

if the chick armsmaster was a diversity hire, and since Baldwin is a leftist and probably supports diversity hire
Then Baldwin should have no problem with the female armsmaster and blame himself for being part of the patriarchy

Maybe this dangerous diversity hire bullshit will change for leftsit and hire people who are qualified,
But I think not

You are correct. He was using a cross draw and what you posted is the cross draw. Funny note, the Single Action Shooting Society (SASS) bans cross draw from most of their speed competitions because it's considered unsafe. The barrel of the gun is usually pointed into your leg while holstered, and a right handed shooter will have to sweep the barrel over a wider area before getting on target. It's not relevant to this case because he purposely pointed the gun at someone and pulled the trigger, but it's just interesting to know that his preferred mode of carry is banned from the premier single action shooting organization for being too unsafe.
Lots of places ban cross draw, since you basically muzzle sweep everyone behind you and on your left (or your right, for southpaws) between drawing and getting on target.

I doubt he has a "preferred" mode of carry, just what they had for the character. Wonder how they decide whether fictional cowboy characters do cross draw or not. It does look cooler, and I've worn (an empty revolver) cross draw just to try it out and it does feel like a smoother draw, though strong-side cowboy holsters ride lower on the hip than mine does. I think cross draw is also less likely to get hung up on a jacket.

Can you just shut the fuck up already? Alec Baldwin murdered a woman and you're bitching about the most semantic bullshit around.
He's responsible, period. His shitty armorer wasn't even there to hand him the gun to check and it's his responsibility to check the weapon as well as not point it at people.
That's it, end of story. He needs to go to jail.
He didn't actually murder anyone. When you kill someone by accident, it's called manslaughter. You're not seriously suggesting this wasn't an accident?

I mean anonymous sources that wish to not be named have gone on record saying he threatened to "end her commie ass" just minutes before the shooting occurred so we shouldn't rule it out.

I heard he specifically said he was going to do this trick to everyone on the planet if he gets away with this test.

Why can’t these lazy privileged celebs load their own damn gun? Guns should be more like parachutes in the sense that everyone has to pack/load their own. I think this would eliminate a lot of finger pointing.

Baldwin was probably like:

“ *CLICK CLICK*…. Why the hell isn’t this prop racked? I specifically said to make sure my prop is ready! Good god people I already have to point the dam thing and pull! I suppose next you’ll be asking me to grab my own plate at lunch?!”

But I could be wrong as I doubt Baldwin even knows what racking is.

All that aside, whoever else shares the blame for giving him that gun, the guy must be going through some serious shit right now. I think people should give the guy some space while he deals with this.

Cross draw can be easier when in the saddle at speed, and when seated in general or in some kinds of tight spaces and corners. It is slower than a standard hip or drop leg draw when standing, however, and almost impossible to draw with your off hand regardless of the circumstance. Its a pretty situational draw position that I don't often see historically on a lot of cowboy figures, Marshals or gunfighters.

About the only time I think it was particularly common or expected was during the Civil and Indian wars in pitched battles. Even then that would be because officers that could afford it would have a set of pistols on each hip and then another set of pistols on the cross draw so they'd have four guns and therefore twenty-four shots of .32 ball or .45 (Colt or Schofield) to put the Natives in their proper place (a grave). Even with the top-break models reloading was a bitch and a half, on the Peacemaker the loading gate situation was even slower, so it made more sense to just carry multiple guns.
