Alec Baldwin's 'prop firearm' kills one, injures another

Actor Alec Baldwin discharged a "prop firearm" that killed a cinematographer and injured a the director of the movie Rust, being filmed on a set south of Santa Fe, a county sheriff's office spokesman said late Thursday.

Halyna Hutchins, 42 and the director of photography for the movie, died at University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque. The film's director, Joel Souza, was hospitalized in Santa Fe, Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office spokesman Juan Ríos said.

A source closed to the investigation said Baldwin, 63, was questioned by investigators late Thursday and was seen by a New Mexican reporter and photographer in tears.

Investigators are still trying to determine if the incident was an accident, Ríos said. No charges have been filed, and the investigation remains open, Ríos wrote in a news release.

The prop was fired at Bonanza Creek Ranch, where filming was underway, the sheriff's office said in an early evening news release. Baldwin stars in the production.

Hutchins died from her injuries after she was flown to University of New Mexico Hospital, according to the sheriff's office. Souza was taken to Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center, where he is receiving emergency care, the sheriff's office said. Attempts to get comment from Baldwin were unsuccessful.

“We received the devastating news this evening, that one of our members, Halyna Hutchins, the Director of Photography on a production called ‘Rust’ in New Mexico died from injuries sustained on the set,” John Lindley, the president of the International Cinematographers Guild Local 600, and Rebecca Rhine, the executive director, said in a statement, as reported by Variety. “The details are unclear at this moment, but we are working to learn more, and we support a full investigation into this tragic event. This is a terrible loss, and we mourn the passing of a member of our Guild’s family.”

Deputies were investigating how the accident occurred and "what type of projectile was discharged," the sheriff's office said in an earlier news release.

Rust Movie Productions did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Filming for Rust was set to continue into early November, according to a news release from the New Mexico Film Office. It's described as the story of a 13-year-old boy left to fend for himself and his younger brother following the death of their parents in 1880s Kansas, with New Mexico doubling for Kansas.

Guns firing blanks have been blamed for deaths in past movie productions. Online Hollywood news site Deadline reported, "Actor Jon-Erik Hexum was killed Oct. 18, 1984, on the set of the TV series Cover Up when he accidentally shot himself in the head with a gun loaded with blanks. And in 1993, Brandon Lee, the son of martial arts legend Bruce Lee, died after he was shot in the head by a gun firing blanks on the set of The Crow. Both incidents were determined to have been accidents."

This is a developing story and will be updated.

It's almost like the right have been staring into the abyss for too long and it's starting to stare back. People are getting burned out upholding civility while they're constantly being accused of subhuman behavior and the open celebrations when something bad happens to them.
It is only ever disadvantageous to extend morality and kindness to those who would twist it maliciously to screw you over. The kind of people who have pissed off or otherwise rendered cynical/uncaring the right writ large asked for this kind of behavior when they consistently, constantly act hypocritically about it. The most obvious and noxious variant being the tendency to say red states get what they deserve in a natural disaster for the way they voted but acting sanctimonious and clutching their pearls at anything less than genuine sympathy when one strikes a blue state.

You're going to see a lot more of that kind of attitude from right-wingers as they slowly realize losing with dignity is just losing with extra humiliation. I don't give a fuck about Baldwin one way or the other but I personally think that while it's not exactly in good taste for people to shit on him over this, he and his entire slice of the political spectrum have been begging for this treatment from the moment it became popular for them to try and have their cake (celebrate horrible shit happening to right-wingers, perceived or actual) and eat it too (demanding pity and understanding when horrible shit happens to perceived or actual lefties).

Honestly I'm just left wondering how the fuck you can have such a low budget and standard of safety in the entertainment industry whilst filming a flick that several members of the staff walk off-set.

While I morally agree with what you're saying, it's a losing tactic. The people actively trying to rip the country apart rely on others to uphold their morals as they're being twisted against them. It's one of the rules for radicals.

I am genuinely surprised at how many people on the right are going all in on Baldwin. Colin Powell as well. It's almost like the right have been staring into the abyss for too long and it's starting to stare back. People are getting burned out upholding civility while they're constantly being accused of subhuman behavior and the open celebrations when something bad happens to them. I'm anxious to see people turn into the monsters that SJWs constantly accuse them of being.
They want to see me broke, dead, and my kid's raped. I only hope worse for them.

Right-Wingers Are Exploiting a Woman’s Tragic Death to Troll Alec Baldwin

In a truly ugly display, conservatives are mocking Alec Baldwin following the death of DP Halyna Hutchins, who was killed in a terrible on-set shooting accident by the lefty actor.

"How dare they do exactly what we have done and would do to them!"

The journalist:

The best part about diversity hiring and lowered standards is that journalists get dumber and dumber all the time.
At least we know at this point, they never cared about reducing gun ownership because they unironically believed less guns mean safer world.

Defunding the police while having private security for themselves and denying the clear cut existence of riots. This is well a continuation of that.

In some ways you can respect them as they in the game to win it.

“You shouldn’t X” and “stop doing X” are effectively synonymous. Both are suggesting others to behave in a way that better suits your sensibilities. And yeah, of course people are going to tell you to get fucked, who the fuck are you to tell us what we should or shouldn’t do?

Maybe just leave it at “I personally find it in poor taste and think it’s kind of a shitty thing to do”.
Maybe but people would find that annoying too and someone would've certainly found a way to equate it with "dawnt tell meh what to do!!"

People are just starting to realize that the correct response to being called a bigot isn’t to try and explain how you aren’t one, it’s:

They literally don’t know how to respond when you just don’t fucking care about what they have to say.

If it feels wrong to you, you’re perfectly free to not shit on him for this. For the rest of us this is all a lot of fun and your faggot ass moralizing isn’t gonna stop that.
The real enemy is not some faggot dangerhair calling people racists and nazis and all that other bull.

Its corporate America firing people from their jobs and destroying their means of making a living as well as freezing their assets or closing their bank accounts.

Telling some fat white sjw pig to fuck off is the easy part, the hard part is how to tell the retards in charge of whatever company someone would work at, that Twitter and HR are full of bull and nobody cares.

The real fascism is liberals using corporations to police behavior since Trump unironically enough showed how cucked the Federal government is these days when states tell it to fuck off or not comply.

It's literally a props issue. The gun wasn't supposed to be loaded with live rounds.
> Retard
Don't point it at people outside of the scene then.
I mean mate, this is tragic, and I feel awful for her and her family, but if it was literally just a prop gun that was handed to him, and he was told "point it at the camera and pull the trigger" then how can you blame the guy? A life was already lost today, why are you trying to ruin another for an accident that was not necessarily his fault?

Edit: As someone else said, if he broke safety protocols and haphazardly pointed it at the assistant not thinking it could be dangerous, then yeh, maybe involuntary manslaughter charges are in order. However, this cow specifically said he doesn't care/know if it was negligent or not.
> Retard
Y'all are fucking faggots for a-logging Baldwin because what, he played a really shitty portrayal of Trump on SNL?

I guess anyone who didn't like God himself deserves every bad thing they can get.
>Faggot.

Stay mad.

Don't harass this baby raper.

I will translate from baby raping politisprog to normie.
"Alec disagrees with me me politically and don't support my baby cannibalism there for i he deserves it"

There is no de-escalation when there is no risk of even a proportional response. And there is nothing wrong with holding someone to the standards they force onto others. Especially when it's limited to just words on a screen.

For all the people saying he should be locked up in the thread, I don't think a single one would vote for first degree murder if they were on the jury.
No one said Murder 1. I'd convict on Manslaughter 2 just because I would be facing such a charge if I did this. Too many warning flags for Baldwin to ignore like his union staff leaving or the general incompetence of his arms mistress.

I think you read something I didn't mean in that post. My point was the people saying he should be locked up or did this or that won't throw away their ethics to convict the man of any crime he's charged with if he wasn't guilty.

Saying to the people concerned about what others are saying in the thread, specifically concerns about Baldwin being treated unfairly, that I believed the people in their view treating him unfairly in the thread would still give him a fair trial.

Until video games get pozzed up with ARs replaced with laser rainbow flag dildos, Hollywood can't stop the march towards making gun rights popular.
I guess that explains the “gun” skins in Valorant. Most of the skins look and act nothing like real guns and they literally have a skin that turns the guns into magic dragons that eat magazines to reload.

So absolutely nothing has been done about prop-guns since Brandon died? You're telling me they can't just make a replica with a completely closed-off barrel and a mechanism that produces muzzle-flash / noise when fired without having to use actual gunpowder?
Correct. Also for some reason they keep real, live ammunition on the set. I guess they need it for inserts of bullets hitting walls and things, but it's weird that it's not segregated from the stuff they use when shooting lensing the actors.

To give people a bit of context for why "blanks" doesn't mean "safe", here's a video from the Doom movie extras. At 4:24 in, there's a segment where the firearms instructor demonstrates to the actors why they should not be shooting blanks at someone close up:

Have you guys considered that it might just be an accident?
Accidents like this generally aren't chance. They're the cumulative result of unsafe practices, equipment, and behaviors.
