Alec Baldwin's 'prop firearm' kills one, injures another

Actor Alec Baldwin discharged a "prop firearm" that killed a cinematographer and injured a the director of the movie Rust, being filmed on a set south of Santa Fe, a county sheriff's office spokesman said late Thursday.

Halyna Hutchins, 42 and the director of photography for the movie, died at University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque. The film's director, Joel Souza, was hospitalized in Santa Fe, Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office spokesman Juan Ríos said.

A source closed to the investigation said Baldwin, 63, was questioned by investigators late Thursday and was seen by a New Mexican reporter and photographer in tears.

Investigators are still trying to determine if the incident was an accident, Ríos said. No charges have been filed, and the investigation remains open, Ríos wrote in a news release.

The prop was fired at Bonanza Creek Ranch, where filming was underway, the sheriff's office said in an early evening news release. Baldwin stars in the production.

Hutchins died from her injuries after she was flown to University of New Mexico Hospital, according to the sheriff's office. Souza was taken to Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center, where he is receiving emergency care, the sheriff's office said. Attempts to get comment from Baldwin were unsuccessful.

“We received the devastating news this evening, that one of our members, Halyna Hutchins, the Director of Photography on a production called ‘Rust’ in New Mexico died from injuries sustained on the set,” John Lindley, the president of the International Cinematographers Guild Local 600, and Rebecca Rhine, the executive director, said in a statement, as reported by Variety. “The details are unclear at this moment, but we are working to learn more, and we support a full investigation into this tragic event. This is a terrible loss, and we mourn the passing of a member of our Guild’s family.”

Deputies were investigating how the accident occurred and "what type of projectile was discharged," the sheriff's office said in an earlier news release.

Rust Movie Productions did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Filming for Rust was set to continue into early November, according to a news release from the New Mexico Film Office. It's described as the story of a 13-year-old boy left to fend for himself and his younger brother following the death of their parents in 1880s Kansas, with New Mexico doubling for Kansas.

Guns firing blanks have been blamed for deaths in past movie productions. Online Hollywood news site Deadline reported, "Actor Jon-Erik Hexum was killed Oct. 18, 1984, on the set of the TV series Cover Up when he accidentally shot himself in the head with a gun loaded with blanks. And in 1993, Brandon Lee, the son of martial arts legend Bruce Lee, died after he was shot in the head by a gun firing blanks on the set of The Crow. Both incidents were determined to have been accidents."

This is a developing story and will be updated.

I wish Bette Davis was alive to give Baldwin a little talking about gun safety.

Keep in mind, during that era, real guns were often used during filming.

Yeah, some of the things described in the original press release sounded like he got pissed and pointed what he thought was only a prop gun toward the crew and shot them, now the blame is being shifted to the incompetent armorers, reinforcing the idea that it mostly because they were working with non-union armorers and poor Alec Baldwin was caught up in the middle of it...which would conveniently save him from personal lawsuits and any criminal liability.

There were witnesses there and the director would've remembered if they were filming or not.

If things happened exactly as the current news indicates, Baldwin was handed a "hot" gun that was said to be cold by the idiots running the armory, shot at the camera in a cool "aim at the camera" shot, hit Hutchins and Souza behind her...and footage would exist.

If it didn't, and Baldwin was pissed at the crew between shots and "pretended" to shoot them as an unofficial (fake?) article seemed to indicate, no footage would exist.

The twist here that existence of the footage would exonerate Baldwin and prove the news story, making it in the best interest for the footage to be secured by police and the media to publicize that fact.

If only it were that simple...so where's the fucking footage?
The only thing indicating he intentionally pointed and shot at anyone was that completely fake screencap from 4chan. Remember to check your sources.
This is TMZ, so take it with a grain of salt until other sources back this up, but holy shit

Gun That Killed DP ...ALLEGEDLY USED FOR OFF-SET TARGET PRACTICE

https://www.tmz.com/2021/10/23/alec-baldwin-rust-gun-accident-used-off-set-target-practice/ (https://archive.ph/zk961)

The smoking gun that claimed the life of Halyna Hutchins might've been more than just an on-set prop -- it was also being fired recreationally, even when cameras weren't rolling.

Multiple sources directly connected to the 'Rust' production tell TMZ ... the same gun Alec Baldwin accidentally fired -- hitting the DP and director -- was being used by crews members off set as well, for what we're told amounted to target practice.

We're told this off-the-clock shooting -- which was allegedly happening away from the movie lot -- was being done with real bullets ... which is how some who worked on the film believe a live round found its way in one of the chambers that day.

Obviously, authorities would want to speak to anyone who had been using the weapon for target practice, and -- more importantly -- to whoever was putting the gun back among others used for filming.

We've reached out to law enforcement to see if that's happened yet.

There's also this ... one source who was on set and familiar with the goings-on of the crew tells us that when cops showed up, they found live ammo and blanks were being stored in the same area -- another possible explanation for how an actual bullet slipped got in the gun.
TMZ is trashy but they're actually very reliable factually. If TMZ is reporting this it's probably true.
The AD getting thrown under the boss sucks major ass. Guns should only be going through the armorer to the actor/stunt person's hands and this had happened 3 times already.

This is why it pays not to be a minor asshole. He rubbed people the wrong way and now nobody will stick up for him since they don't like him and he isn't a big enough asshole that anyone's afraid of him. Sucks to suck.

I like hearing the victims husband was a lawyer for the Clinton's. If that agent 47 meme is more on point than we think I might die of laughter.
The AD absolutely fucked up majorly. If he's not supposed to be handing guns around he's not supposed to be handing guns around. What I want to know is who handed him the gun? Did he just grab it himself without checking it or did someone else give it to him and tell him it was cold?

I'm so far behind but after reading this, I'm thinking Hollywood banning guns from their movies and letting guns left to videos might be better in the long run.

Democrat's base their definitions of guns from movies like Rambo and I didn't know the Death Wish remake had Bruce Willis buying a full auto AR pistol in Chicago legally. Plus silencers lol when Colin Noir showed recently that they are just there to protect the shooter's hearing and people can still hear the shots.

Thanks Call of Duty, Battlefield and Bush's GWOT for saving the 2nd amendment from Democrats.

Getting super Brandon Lee scenario flashbacks. Was doing some digging into the Brandon Lee incident and apparently there were rumors that, "he might have been murdered by gangsters in the Hong Kong film industry or by a drug gang." Now today, we are reading speculation that a Trump Supporter is the cause of this. First, I think it is monstrous to continue to use death as a tool to further a political position even more heinous when it is intending to further bring divisiveness to an already fracturing civilization. More than likely, the investigation is going to follow Brandon Lee and end with the film crew baring the brunt of the heat. Disregarding the whole, this person pulled the trigger therefore they are liable argument.

As others have pointed out, there are procedures in the entertainment industry to prevent accidents like this. Obviously, there has been a break in procedure that has resulted in death. To say Alec bares the responsibility in full because they are the one to pull the trigger are arguing purely on emotion much like a faggot, progressive, soy drone, religious drone, political sheeple, Canadian cuck, gorilla blow hard, beanie smoothie; whatever radical retard you want to choose. Bottom line is, Alec is an actor in this scenario. Producers are basically glorified investors who want to make more money off of their investments; a death on set caused by negligence is the opposite of doing that.

...Negligence Caused Death...

Edit:

Leave more disagree stickers and show the troons how big your hate boner is. They need more dilators after all.

Not a Trump supporter, glow in the dark shit you dumb nigger.

I keep thinking about this and wondering how patient you would have to be to intentionally set up a situation where he would do this.

You'd either have to infiltrate the cast itself and notice a pattern where he points the gun at the director, actively work behind the scenes to sabotage the production and get all these competent people to walk out.... Or Baldwin was blackmailed to do it. Most of the shitty decisions can be traced back to him.

There's no better example of the "Don't assume malice when stupidity is probably the cause" phenomenon than the Q-take on this.

But it's understandable.

The allure of complexity (it's cool and sexy) is strong when when you realize how mundane most things are, even crimes and tragedies, and how the mighty can trip and fall off a cliff as easily as the yokels. Nobody has to push them.

It also is politically comforting: the idea that your side has the money, power, influence and hypercompetency of the Gods to pull off these machinations? It helps a few more sleep at night when they can say "Well, we're taking the "L" on almost every front, but at least our super-secret agents got THAT guy...."

What does Baldwin's stance on gun control have to do with anything? He was firing blanks on a film set. Either side would really have to struggle to find any broader 2nd amendment implications to that situation. Harping on it reeks of clickbait from people desperate to get attention from pointing out LIBRUL HYPOCRISY.
