Actor Alec Baldwin discharged a "prop firearm" that killed a cinematographer and injured a the director of the movie Rust, being filmed on a set south of Santa Fe, a county sheriff's office spokesman said late Thursday.

Halyna Hutchins, 42 and the director of photography for the movie, died at University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque. The film's director, Joel Souza, was hospitalized in Santa Fe, Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office spokesman Juan Ríos said.

A source closed to the investigation said Baldwin, 63, was questioned by investigators late Thursday and was seen by a New Mexican reporter and photographer in tears.

Investigators are still trying to determine if the incident was an accident, Ríos said. No charges have been filed, and the investigation remains open, Ríos wrote in a news release.

The prop was fired at Bonanza Creek Ranch, where filming was underway, the sheriff's office said in an early evening news release. Baldwin stars in the production.

Hutchins died from her injuries after she was flown to University of New Mexico Hospital, according to the sheriff's office. Souza was taken to Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center, where he is receiving emergency care, the sheriff's office said. Attempts to get comment from Baldwin were unsuccessful.

“We received the devastating news this evening, that one of our members, Halyna Hutchins, the Director of Photography on a production called ‘Rust’ in New Mexico died from injuries sustained on the set,” John Lindley, the president of the International Cinematographers Guild Local 600, and Rebecca Rhine, the executive director, said in a statement, as reported by Variety. “The details are unclear at this moment, but we are working to learn more, and we support a full investigation into this tragic event. This is a terrible loss, and we mourn the passing of a member of our Guild’s family.”

Deputies were investigating how the accident occurred and "what type of projectile was discharged," the sheriff's office said in an earlier news release.

Rust Movie Productions did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Filming for Rust was set to continue into early November, according to a news release from the New Mexico Film Office. It's described as the story of a 13-year-old boy left to fend for himself and his younger brother following the death of their parents in 1880s Kansas, with New Mexico doubling for Kansas.

Guns firing blanks have been blamed for deaths in past movie productions. Online Hollywood news site Deadline reported, "Actor Jon-Erik Hexum was killed Oct. 18, 1984, on the set of the TV series Cover Up when he accidentally shot himself in the head with a gun loaded with blanks. And in 1993, Brandon Lee, the son of martial arts legend Bruce Lee, died after he was shot in the head by a gun firing blanks on the set of The Crow. Both incidents were determined to have been accidents."

This is a developing story and will be updated.

Where have I dick rode Trump, retard? oh I forgot, you're one of these dipshits who only know of Alec because of Trump so anything against him is dickriding Trump?

Also, you're full of shit otherwise you wouldn't have had your head explode over my original troll advice post.
You sound a bit mad maybe take a little break and regain your composure

If Trump held an event where he was the lead producer, and where multiple firearms accidents occurred, and an e-THOT who had little to no experience as an armorer was handling live and blank ammunition, with random crew using weapons on set to go plinking, where most of the union crew walked off the set because of safety violations, and whose Assistant Director had multiple complaints against him, if Trump then started practicing “cross draws” on a set while the crew was setting up a shot which also violates common Hollywood safety procedures, resulting in killing a mother and wounding your director, then yes, the preponderance of people everywhere, including this site, would be “upset” with Trump for this gross negligence.
The fact that Baldwin is also Publicly anti-2A during this also makes him a hypocrite.
Any more rhetorical questions?

Could not have happened to a nicer person. Excepy maybe David Hogg or Shannon Watts.

I know he is a producer on this but is he the lead producer?

I know he is a producer on this but is he the lead producer?
That is a fair question. And I might have been inelegant or - gasp - even wrong by saying “lead”.
But certainly looking at the cast and crew, Baldwin is a A-list Hollywood Star and the rest of these people are nobodies more or less. It would have been nice if Baldwin could have been the grown-up in the room.
He wasn’t.

I know he is a producer on this but is he the lead producer?
Idk the answer but why would it matter? It's literally his project. He co-wrote it, he is a main character if not the lead in it, he is financing it, he is producing it, he is the one they used to get the rest of the financing for the movie and his production company is most likely involved with it.

Whether he is the lead producer or not(which he probably isn't because someone else will do that while he is acting and he overviews the rest) if he said something wasn't going to happen it wasn't going to happen.

Did we all forget Tom Cruise yelling at his crew for not following covid procedures? Do you think anything close to this would happen on a Tom Cruise set? When you are the lead + the production company behind a movie is yours you are the boss on set. Everyone is essentially working for you. When you are the boss you are responsible for what happens, particularly when you are on the ground.

How irresponsible are se of you people defending this? Forget him going to jail, how do you read what's come out the past couple of days and leave with "Alec dindu nothin. He was a gud boy" The gun he used discharged accidently 3 prior times. That alone is damning that the people running this production are negligent AF and that would be the case if nobody died.

Y'all are weird.

So from now on shootouts in movies and TV shows will look even faker because there will be no recoil/the actor will have to pretend like there's recoil?
Shootouts are already fake but the most entertaining one has to be the opening of Predator 2 with Danny Glover.

I can see why a lot of Democrats here in California based their views off guns from movies like that.

I remember seeing some actual combat footage of a firefight from Afghanistan and the shit looked boring like I couldn't see the enemy that the guys were claiming the Taliban was shooting from. They were using a GoPro helmet cam.

He wasn’t.
I mean if he was aware of the issues, he had the power and should have used it to stop production until the issues were fixed but if he wasn't aware I really want to know why.

Did he just not care and didn't want to know about what was going on at sets, or did he not care about the issues despite being aware or was there a cover-up to avoid letting the higher-ups know because far as I tell with the info out right now that the assistant director was the person in the highest position power who 100% knew beforehand.

But these questions also fall on the director and a number of other people, it is just a total failure. Doubt anyone but Hannah Gutierrez-Reed will go to jail but hopefully will be some huge lawsuits.

Asking questions is not defending him, it's wanting to get a fuller picture
