Yeah, its not a perfect solution, but it at least puts you on an even playing field--way better than being in a situation where only the wrong people have guns.Americans always say "get a gun" like that somehow solves everything, and while it's a fine first step it doesn't help much when everyone else outnumbers you and also has guns.
If you really want protection you should join a gang.
Frankly I think it would also raise the general intelligence of society. People tend to get dumber when they have too many safety nets, which is why we have modern scourges like SJWs these days.
To use an example, we're always complaining about journalists being corrupt. But imagine if they lived in a world where their office being raided by an armed mob was a very real possibility. Even if you assumed the journo themselves was armed or had armed guards, that still would lead to the classic "Who Will Bell the Cat?" situation, where they might not wanna risk a fight just on the off chance that this is the day some punk gets lucky and puts a cap in their ass.
Or as Robert E. Howard once wrote, "Barbarians are naturally more polite than civilized men, because civilized men know they can insult their guests without immediately having their heads separated from their neck."
