I would very definitely avoid Brave. I had an argument with them about soliciting donations using my name without consent in 2018 (which they have since changed), and lately they've been caught sneakily adding their own affiliate links into web pages...

Been using Brave since shortly before making my account due to mild cyber security concerns (I.E. Fuck Google, srsly) I don't auto contribute, i usually gather a bit and donate when i think it's a more helpful amount, I guess I'll set it up if you insist it'll help. I'll still do separate donations when I get a juicier amount.

do i have to pay any money or does just using the browser help?

Just using the browser is good. For example, if you watch a lot of stuff on JewTube, it will block the their ads, but still show you Brave Ads, which are way less intrusive (they literally pop up in a corner of the screen and don't affect anything you're doing) and you can just dismiss them, you'll still get BAT from it.

If you're on the fence about Brave, just do it. The ads are completely unintrusive, you'll never notice them, and its worth it just for blocking all the other shitty ads.

Just keep another browser too because a few times a month I'll run in to a link that won't work in Brave.
