Semi serious question for once. I dont know any drinking fans to ask this question in person so im hoping my fellow drunk kiwis can help me out. And I'm not talking about Ethan ralph levels of drinking, im referring to drinking in general.

For context I never drank before in my entire life. Just never felt a reason to. I've also had the worry of becoming reliant on it as a way to drown out my constant passive anxiety which caused me to shy away but I've always wondered if I'm mising out

Or do I just skip straight to injecting whole marijuanas?

Yeah theres nothing better than getting drunk with the boys after work and then waking up for work and doing it all over again

Weed is gay, boring and just makes you tired theres better more fun drugs todo
Only certain strains make you tired dumbass.
Alcohol makes a big man small and can lead to a life of crime.
Demon rum makes a gent a bum, and you cash in before your time.
Bootleg gin for your Mickey Finn till you don't even know your name.
Flat on your face, public disgrace, and there's only one guy to blame!

A drink here or there is nothing, it's when you just keep drinking when it's a problem. You feel more open and confident but as you drink more in one sitting you also start saying more retarded shit if thats what youve got swimming around in your brain. Then after waking up the next day you remember not only what you wanted to forget for the night but also the new retarded shit you did last night being drunk.

Drinking doesn't make you not be a loser, it just makes you forget if you are one for a bit. And if your willpower is low enough you'll just want to drink again that evening to zone it out. Do that enough times and eventually you're spending more on booze than you really should.

As long as you have some iota of self control and limit yourself you should be fine.

I drink a lot myself but one of my loved ones is a full blown alcoholic and its really like jekyll and hyde, not even the same person anymore. If you're using alcohol to bury who you are when you're sober you're 100% fucking yourself up.

Buy drink mix ingredients and try them out. It's amazing what some tonic water or bitters will do to hard liquor.

For a first drink I recommend a gin and coke. Beefeater is good on a budget.

Nah. I say this as a guy who got drunk last night to finish off some alcohol I bought for cooking. Alcohol is expensive and you literally piss it away. I'm actually happy when I'm drunk which raises issues with potential for addiction, but even when you're happy alcohol leaves you non-functional for hours where you can't drive or do other things so thats your time wasted, alcohol also has lots of calories so you now need to work harder to burn it off.

Best case scenario is alcohol wastes your time, your money, and makes you happy for a few hours before making you fat.
Anyone who works in or visits a pub at night will also know people who drink heavily stink like shit, alcohol seriously fucks with your intestines.

I went through a period of 4 or 5 years where I didn't drink at all.

I didn't miss it but it's funny how annoyed/angry other people get when you won't drink booze with them.

As a teenager yes, as an adult not really. Even in university the days where it was worth drinking were a lot fewer, mostly holidays.

There are a lot of good alcohol products out there (especially wines), but it is meant to be enjoyed (wait for it) responsibly.

Drinking for the sake of getting drunk leads to problems down the line, especially if you enjoy that state of mind. It almost killed me a few times when I let it take over, and it succeeded in killing my dad.

If you start to see yourself needing to consume alcohol, handle the problem before it handles you.

There's two main types of weed. One makes you relaxed and tired, the other makes you energized. It's not rocket science dipshit. And I didn't type paragraphs I copy and pasted a lyrics from a Frank Sinatra movie you uncultured swine. What is it about pot that makes internet alcoholic incels so angry? No one IRL acts like this.

Not really.
I have a very recent and relevant account.

I myself had never drank into adulthood for basically the exact same reason in not seeing any real point, even mentioned it in some thread before. However, just earlier this month my brother who is a heavy drinker was having his bachelor party and as a fun gift I told him I'd have my first drink at his party since he never really understood why I didn't. So, during the 4 day trip I drank and fully expected to get easily smashed due to zero tolerance.

So, first things first alcohol is mostly disgusting when you have no taste for it. First day I had a Corona (gross) and a rum & coke (semi-gross). The next day I hit really hard for a non-drinker with 3 margaritas (pretty good), 5 mixed fruity rum drinks (REALLY good on the fist one... the next 4 ranged from bad to pretty good, the mix must have been messed up by the bartender) and a can of Pabst Blue Ribbon (Barf). Day after that I had a couple Red Bull + whiskey drinks (average) and what was basically a long island iced tea milkshake (very good, but only because the alcohol taste was completely covered). I also had a glass of very expensive wine on the 2nd day which I wanted to give it's own section because it was one of the worst thing I have ever tasted... just getting it down my throat was a challenge, but my bro's father-in-law's rich friends who got it all commented on how good it is... I think this speaks to the differences of non-drinkers and drinkers pallets.

Here is where I think things go to being less useful, I might need to make a thread about this to query drinkers if it's unusual... but I did not get any kind of effect from the alcohol at all. The first day I only had the two drinks which I thought would do something since it was my first time, but it wasn't too much. The next day is when I drank 3 margaritas, the glass of wine, the 5 rums and the Pabst beer all within a few hours and got nothing from it. At that point it just seemed like reaching an actual drunk state would take excessive amounts so I gave up the next day only drinking the things my bro directly insisted on.

My overall experience, because I didn't even get a buzz, is that it's not worth drinking stuff that tastes pretty bad for no reason. If I wanted to get drunk, the price it would cost in harder stuff would just be too much. So, at least from a similar starting point person I would say you didn't miss out.

Though, if the opportunity comes up I'll try weed at this point just to see if that works and to experience an altered state at least once.
It depends on your genetics, weight, what you've eaten prior to drinking, and the types of medications you're on. East Asians and American Indians often have a lower tolerance to alcohol. Slavs often have a high tolerance. If you're a fat Slav that isn't on any medication and has eaten a good meal, you'll probably have a pretty decent tolerance to it as a novice drinker. Cheeki breeki.

Old man who grew up in times where drinking was even more common in teens and semi expected in a country with a big drinking culture here: I never drank and never regretted it. The people I grew up with and hit the juice regularly aged all terribly and prematurely. That stuff is pure poison if you ask me.

If you want to have fun with mind altering substances, look into psychadelics. More fun and much less likely to permanently damage you or get addicted to. My drug of choice was LSD back in the day, but I have no idea where you'd get LSD these days. (LSD is kinda funny that way, you either keep using it at a low level over many years with months in between trips or you just eventually got all out of it you wanted to and never go back to it again. Contrary to alcohol, it's impossible to get addicted to - besides rapid tolerance you'll really just not want to take it that often. It's hard to explain.)

As someone who used to hate alcohol when I was younger but really enjoy harsher drinks now, I think it's similar to how people handle spice. It's a very overwhelming flavor when you're not used to it, which is why it's so unpleasant, but when you get a sense of it you start to really pick up new flavors and sensations you otherwise wouldn't. Though I'm still rather hit or miss with wine and whiskey that has too much of that fake smoke flavor to it is disgusting.

I enjoy it, feeling a little buzzed is great. Obviously drinking too much can be bad, but I feel people sacrifice the good of drinking because of fear of the bad and a lack of self control.

Missing out? Perhaps, but it's not a big deal.

The alcohol is more of a "tool" to make social interaction less awkward. So don't drink alone, that's just sad.

All things in moderation.

I like to have a beer with my dinner most nights. It’s a nice way to just relax after a work day. Sometimes I’ll go out with a few friends and have a few cocktails or shots, but it’s not a common occurrence. Drunks can be fun sometimes, but they’re mostly a giant pain in the ass. You can get away with it more when you’re younger (late teens to mid 20s) but if you’re in your 30s and 40s still trying to act like a college fratbro drinking your weight in booze it just becomes pathetic.

I don’t know where I’m going with this, I’m kinda high. Do that in moderation as well. Nobody likes a pothead

Most of the people here are talking like the only way to enjoy alcohol is to get absolutely shit faced and hammered.

Have a glass of wine or a beer or two. If you have never drank before thats all you will need to feel some relaxation. Don't go over more then 2 drinks in an hour and no more then 3 in a night when you first try it. Having a drink won't instantly turn you into an alcoholic, it takes lots of repeated exposure and heavy drinking for that to happen.

Most people who get addicted to alcohol have some other underlying issue like anxiety that makes them feel the only way to relax or have fun is to get hammered. It is possible to get addicted to alcohol just because you like the feeling too much, but that can happen with anything such as video games. It is true that alcohol has addictive properties, but you need yo drink ALOT and often for that to happen.

Keep it to less then 7 drinks a week and only enjoy a drink or two at a time and you will be fine. Save it for special occasions like when you have a fancy meal or have a couple friends over.

There is evidence that mild alcohol consumption even has some health benefits, but the studies sometimes contradict one another.
