Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is debuting later this year, but the conglomerate just acquired the rights to The Hobbit and more of Middle Earth, going against one of J.R.R. Tolkien’s standards when protecting his stories.

The world of author J.R.R. Tolkien and his Middle Earth with Mount Doom, the Shire, and Dark Lord Sauron is one of the most beloved novels and film franchises in history, with director Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy being regarded as one of the greatest sagas of all time.

Adding to this fantasy world this September is Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, a $500 million streaming series that’s been met with mixed reviews upon its official teaser trailer.


Not many fans were enthused when Amazon announced that they would be caring for the Tolkien torch follow Peter Jackson’s Rings and The Hobbit franchise. In fact, upon unveiling new and original characters, many fans expressed their disappointment in Amazon and more, claiming that the studio will “undermine” J.R.R. Tolkien’s legacy.

For those of you who only know the movies and are wondering why any of this outcry matters, Tolkien didn’t set out to write just another fantasy, his first love was language and mythology. As a linguist, he set out to make the most beautiful language ever created (Elvish.) He invented Elvish based on Northern European languages. As a historian, he wrote the Silmarillion and all the other extensive back lore that is only hinted at in the movies as alternate mythology for the British Isles. The very creation of Middle Earth by the gods through an act of song was informed by Finnish myths. He was steeped in Northern and Western European culture and the myths, legends, languages, stories, racial characteristics, history, and cultures of Middle Earth are inextricably built from corresponding roots of European culture in a way that no fantasy has ever been able to replicate before or since. He is considered by many of us to be the true father of modern fantasy and no one—bar none—has equaled the depth and verisimilitude he brought to that creation.
This trailer and all Amazon interviews to date prove that they don’t care about any of this and intend to dismantle the very foundation of why Tolkien wrote these books as a labor of love in the first place. He loved his culture, his history, and his language and his invented languages, world, races, and stories were the medium through which he communicated his love of his ancestral heritage. To change his work in the ways shown in this trailer and subsequent interviews is not just to reinterpret some surface aspect of his stories, it is to completely undermine his stated intent, strike at the heart of his passion, and directly attack his own cultural heritage.
Following a lengthy financial business process, Amazon Studios has officially acquired the entirety of MGM Studios, including Tolkien’s The Hobbit film rights and more.

In 1968, J.R.R. Tolkien sold the film, stage, and merchandising rights of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit novels to United Artists after being repeatedly pressured by his legal staff and financial advisors. But, United Artists shelved LOTR for eight years until selling the rights to The Saul Zaentz Company.

The Saul Zaentz Company then licensed the rights to produce an animated The Hobbit (1977) film to Rankin/Bass (Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer), the first motion picture media of any Tolkien work.

Zaentz’s cult-classic The Lord of the Rings (1978) animated feature followed, but these films were all done after the passing of author J.R.R. Tolkien in 1973.

Now Amazon has joined the mix of The Hobbit being tossed around from studio to studio after Tolkien’s passing, potentially hurting the very essence of Bilbo Baggins, the dwarven kin of Thorin Oakenshield, and more.
Tolkien’s estate long battled with New Line Cinema, Miramax, Disney (who almost produced The Lord of the Rings in 1997), director Peter Jackson, and Warner Brothers, ultimately resulting in Jackson reportedly being barred from creating any more live-action films of his Rings and Hobbit trilogies.

Nearly a decade later and Middle Earth is coming out of retirement, especially with Amazon acquiring MGM Studios, following The Walt Disney Company’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox (which is now implementing the expanded Marvel Universe into the Marvel Cinematic Universe).

What fans should understand is that Amazon owns the entirety of The Hobbit film and merchandising rights, meaning that a Rings of Power spin-off Amazon series centered on the tales of Biblo Baggins and more could potentially be in the works.

Taking place in the episodic Second Age of Middle Earth, Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power chronicles the construction of the One Ring worn by dark lord Sauron under Mount Doom:

Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky, Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone, Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die, One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne in the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.

The near $1 billion series is set to focus on the rise of the Dark Lord Sauron, the historic alliance between Elves and Men (that transcended the entire franchise), the island of Númenor/Westernesse, as well as a look into Khazad‐dûm/Moria before the dwarven kingdom fell to hoards of goblins and the deadly Balrog/Durin’s Bane.

However, unfortunately, you won’t be seeing any of legendary hobbit Frodo Baggins (Elijah Wood), Gandalf (Sir Ian McKellan), Bilbo Baggins (Sir Ian Holm), Samwise Gamgee (Sean Astin), Merry Brandybuck (Dominic Monaghan), Pippen Took (Billy Boyd), Legolas (Orlando Bloom), Saruman (Sir Christopher Lee), Gollum (Andy Serkis), and more in The Rings of Power.

This series features a relatively unknown cast of lead and supporting actors that are set to play some of the most formative names in Elrond (Robert Aramayo, replacing Hugo Weaving), Lady Galadriel of Lothlórien (Morfydd Clark, replacing Cate Blanchett), and Prince Durin IV (Owain Arthur).

New characters like Dwarven Princess Disa(Sophia Nomvete), silvan elf Arondir (Ismael Cruz Córdova), and Cole (Maxim Baldry) have been created specifically for the series.

Showrunner Patrick McKay and writer JD Payne pen the tentative series with directors JA Bayona and Wayne Che Yip leading the Rings show set to debut on September 2, 2022.

That idiot that wrote the article stating Tolkien wouldn't care about what's going on now because he sold the rights missed this part. And also the fact that he died in 1973 and he was at the end of his life when he did sell those rights. He wouldn't be the first person pressured into doing things that make lawyers money.

This franchise is fucked now for sure.
The only thing that bugs me on this is the soulless forced diversity bullshit.

If they wanted to cast a person of color for one of they roles because they were the literal best actor for it or because they were doing a re-imagining? Cool. But this is solely to tick off the diversity box and try and earn points in the climate of Current Year. It's hollow and more transparent than a divorced cross-dresser hanging from the ceiling.

I don't recall a similar outcry coming from those Shadow of Mordor games where Shelob was turned into some pretty waifu who had a thing with Sauron and generally made a goddamned mess of established lore. Or the other video games where you had Gandalf running around like he was a weird mix between Goku and Kratos or you were playing at the B-Team LotR characters doing things behind the scenes.

Or the Jackson movies which took some liberties. Most notably with Tom Bombadil (much to the dismay of diehard Tolkien purists) and with elevating the character of Arwen to a much more prominent role.

They're adaptations. This has been a problem for like thousands of years, but the original works persist on. (Although, yeah, I do think it is entirely possible that we might see some 'revisions' to Tolkien's work that remove any mention of Easterners because that's 'problematic' language.)

White people can't have anything without it being crushed into diversity submission. Try adapting an African story with white cast members and see what happens. Why don't more black people write fantasy fiction with black casts? Netflix will make a season of anything. Give it a try. Don't you want your own original stories told instead of ones that are decades old and told again and again already?

They are just trying to tick those boxes because every production has to have a certain number of diversity cast members in it or people get mad that they don't see someone who looks like them.

Let this be a lesson, creators. Include an iron clad clause in your will that makes your work public domain when you or the son that you trust dies.
Unless the creators self-published their works, keep ownership of copyrights and trademarks to their works, this is a good idea.
However if they go to a publisher/corporation for publication without a small army of lawyers to maintain ownership. The corporation will all due likely own their works and have the lawyers to render the wills null and void.

I agree, for what it's worth. In Current Year, trying to take, say, an 'ethnic' story and using white cast members will have folks shitting themselves in rage. The most blatant recent example I can think of was Jake Glyenhaal in Prince of Persia, but the outrage brigade makes a stink over everything.

But there have adaptations of 'Western' works using different frameworks. There was an HBO adaptation of As You Like It set in feudal Japan (and starring a primarily white cast, including Alfred Molina), for example.

Kurosawa also did a Japanese influenced version of Macbeth. You can also flip it around and look at the West's adaptation of Kurosawa's work (Seven Samurai) into a Western (Magnificent Seven.) There were also the more recent adaptations of Japanese horror films, like Sarah Michelle Gellar in The Grudge.

And the crazy thing is, I think that there's a lot of potential for interesting stories to be told. I'd love to see a Western adaptation of Romance of the Three Kingdoms, for example, on the scale of Game of Thrones or something.

The fact that these corps just keep going back to the same old well until it's bone dry is literally only because it's a proven, licensed property with legs. Exclusivity is important to these assholes.

Yeah, exactly. As I said, I wouldn't give a shit if black dude auditioned and won the part because he was fucking amazing. I find it really hollow and unimaginative to see showrunners creating completely new characters to forcefeed 'diversity.' Like, say what you will about Jackson's decisions with his trilogy, but he at least worked within the framework established by Tolkien. Arwen, although a completely minor character, already existed and was created by Tolkien. She wasn't Jackson's OC character donut steel.
