4 episodes in and I am watching the white whale. A show that takes European colonialism, the migration crisis, race and gender relations head on and for some inexplicable reason does not manage to cock it up and become sanctimonious garbage like Doctor Who. Not even sure how to start. So I will start with the characters. The lead female is NOT a Mary Sue. Shocking I know. She is strong to a point but is crippled by intense naivety and the simple fact that at the end of the day in a straight up fight with a man she got her ass beat. Which allowed for the male hero to save her ass when she got in over her head. WTF, I thought this was 2019. The girl who managed to kill a werewolf in the first scene of episode 1 needs to have no adversity and can never let her own failings get ahead of her and lead to imminent death and the need for rescue by the patriarchy.
Oh and on that note the different fae races are thinly veiled references to non-anglo saxon white people. The Fairies are Irish, The satyres are black people, not sure wtf the centaurs are supposed to be. And their different religion to the humans while not directly presented as Islam is shown in the same context. A context which by the way does not pretend there to be no problems. In one episode we meet the evil racist white men railing about immigrants bringing evil and corruption into their city. But one episode later it turns out that may be precisely what is happening. Not as a general fault for all immigrants but certainly as a by product. Female hero meets with the plucky resistance later and discovers quick that they are murderous criminals. But at the same time they too have their own logic for being that way.
Its...good. Intelligent even. Its 2019 for gods sake. This show should not exist.
*edit* I just got to the Tea Scene. Whoever wrote this is a genius. "Have you ever been to pu yi? I can assure you nobody there is concerned with building an "inclusive" society" Not since the war, and that is why I am now here". I don't think I have ever seen a greater scathing of woke white people then this. Its a miracle it got past the censors.
