Amnesia: Rebirth - Told A Machine For Pigs to hold it's beer

Eternal Darkness is by far the gold standard and I'm surprised no one has really tried ripping off the way it broke the 4th wall, with only Arkham Asylum doing it once.

Eternal Darkness is overall one of my all time favorite games, I'll always be heartbroken that it never got a sequel.
To be fair Metal Gear Solid was breaking the fourth wall as a game element first. And I'm sure someone did it before that.

But both the Psycho Mantis scene and several codec calls break the fourth wall.

Did anybody itt actually play the game?
The feeling im getting from here is that nobody actually did.
Not saying that's bad, id just like to hear somebody talk mechanical specifics.

Edit: TheAmbiguousLurker probably actually played it
I played through the entire game and got all the endings.

The game plays similarly to The Dark Descent.

Instead of having tinderboxes, you have matches that provide light temporarily and can lit up multiple torches/candles

Lowering your sanity has penalties. You'll eventually get annoying jumpscare images flashing on screen, and you get to a point where you have to mash buttons to get out of a dazed state.

You can cower on the floor by holding the crouch button. I am not sure if it serves any purpose as every time I got stuck in a corner, the monster caught me. There's also a larger emphasis on chase sequences/set pieces.

I don't think you have health, the game throws you into a button mashing sequence if you get caught; it gives you a chance to get away.

Despite mechanic changes, it feels like the game has many scripted sequences to a point where it's insulting. In one instance, there is a monster close to an object you have to interact with that makes noise. I lured the monster into a nearby room with a lock, and locked the monster in. Upon interacting with the object, characters comment on how I'm going to "attract the monster" as if it were still there.

Your character is also pregnant. You have a "Press button to check baby" action. Occasionally the baby kicks and you can check on it to lower your fear/increase sanity

A big part of the protagonists story is that a white woman in Paris wasn't able to marry her black partner, as it was illegal and not allowed by the authorities. Inter-racial marriages were happening in the open since World War one, the frogs never saw it as filthy like the game implies lmao.

Fucking well done.
It's the same shit like Mulan 2020 were disney said she lives in southern china despite the actual tale saying she's from the north.

Rebirth's writers making france's past have racism seems kinda frogcist

God, the one thing I was looking forward to was the story, especially after SOMA. This is sounding more and more like the most obnoxious game of the year.
I really didn't expect much from the gameplay, Amnesia is Amnesia, it's quirky and charming and has it's niche. I feel like the lore is what helps set it apart, just like the Silent Hill series. Way to ruin the one thing it had going for it, Frictional.

It's actually about two women fighting for the custody of the baby.

It available on multiple operating systems and platforms, have a DRM-Free and not tied to any Epic Game Exclusivity deal. Plus, if anything, it was better than the previous Amnensia title Machine for Pigs.

Though I felt they could have eased off with the constant monologue from the character and bring more sense of urgency from the addition of fail states than capitalized on your character being invincible the whole way through.

Maybe it will make up for Routine vanishing off the face of the earth.
Oh man Routine... I remember watching the trailer years ago and thinking how awesome it looked, I ended up forgetting about it until sometime last year while looking around old liked videos on youtube... It was a real bummer to find out that nothing came out of it and I wonder what actually caused it to die

Too bad the game is mediocre, I was really hoping for some good creeps and spooks.

Guess I'll go back to waiting for Scorn and the next chapter of Visage to release in another decade or two :/

Edit: ah shit Routine takes me back and it looked so interesting. Really wish it wasn't dead. Surprised, actually, since the last I read of it the devs were saying they delayed it in order to tighten up one of the potential endings you could reach after taking a certain branching path I think? Why did it die?

The most reccuring rumour I've seen is small variations of how Alien Isolation supposedly stole its thunder, and the devs went back to the drawing board. Info seems real scarce regardless.

I feel ya on Scorn; that shit looks cash as fuck. Can't wait to finally, FINALLY play it next year since they now have a solid release date from the sounds of it.

Here's the thing most people don't want to admit:

Most adventure games were fucking boring. LucasArts solved the problem by making them funny and Sierra solved it by making your many, many deaths hilarious.
Then Henry Stickmin combined the two, trimmed out the long bits, and everyone loved that too

Watching theRadBrad's playthrough of it. Even though there's some "woke" stuff creeping into the game (e.g
protagonist a pregnant woman married to someone possibly of muslim background (could be wrong about this)
), I actually appreciate how it was integrated. Liked the whole idea of a 30s north African setting, much better than the Frankensteinesque "19th century German castle" cliche. Gameplay looks expanded upon, having alternative mobile light sources and some "inner demons".

It's not even that scary. They blow their load really early with the alternate dimension and magic stuff, then taper off with a few weak chase sequences.

Maybe it's just because they have the same formula again and again. The only thing thats really got me so far is the jump scares, but fucking Five Nights at Freddy can pull that off.
