They have a really autistic protocol for it, to ensure people don't get permanently injured (beyond some possible scarring), but it involves not doing it publicly. They also order scheduled canings so the person with the most strokes goes first. They let the others standing in line for their turn watch them getting beaten and screaming and crying. They also don't tell you in advance when it's going to happen. You're only told the day they do it. If the medical officer on hand calls it off because you're in danger from it, they send it back to the judge either to cancel it or convert it to more time behind bars.

One of the more fun things is if you are getting more than six, they swap out the person doing the caning because they don't want the caner to get tired and deliver weaker blows. The last strike should be as powerful as the first, and the caner is obligated to hit as hard as he can.

I think it would make sense to make it optional, you can do some time or you can opt for the caning (or some less harmful kind of corporal punishment). Depending on the crime, that could be either total or partial reduction of jail time. I wouldn't object if a state experimented with that to see if it actually works.

Amos Yee, a registered sex offender, is being held at a maximum security prison in the US state of Illinois.

SINGAPORE: Singaporean Amos Yee is back in jail because he violated parole conditions, US authorities said on Thursday (Nov 9), with prison records showing it could be three years until he is free again.
Yee was admitted under the custody and control of the Illinois Department of Corrections on Tuesday, according to a message from the victim notification network.
The message said he was held at the Stateville Correctional Center, a maximum security prison in Crest Hill, Illinois.
The 25-year-old had been released on parole only a month ago, halfway through his six-year jail term.

Yee was released on parole on Oct 7 about halfway through his six-year jail term for grooming a teenage girl online and asking her for naked pictures of herself.
The Illinois Department of Corrections did not reveal the conditions of his parole, but he was registered as a sex offender.
During this period, Yee stayed in Waukegan city in Illinois.
Yee was sentenced on Dec 3, 2021 after pleading guilty to charges of grooming and possessing child pornography. Sixteen other charges were dismissed as part of a plea deal that Yee agreed to. The jail term was backdated to his arrest in October 2020.
This is not the first time Yee has served time in prison.
In 2015, he was jailed in Singapore for wounding religious feelings by making remarks about Christians. About a year later, Yee was jailed again and fined on a similar charge, this time for making remarks about Christians and Muslims.

Imagine if only the incidents of 2015-16 had taken place. He'd get asylum in the US without any fear of deportation (since all the "crimes" (according to singapore law) would be covered under the 1st amendment (and hell, even defending pedos)). And he'd probably also be able to pull a Yeonmi Park and talk about freedom of speech and civil liberties and shit for some podcast or something and grift from that too. He's in prison right now, right? It'd only make sense considering he was on parole and he'd been convicted of crimes. So what would protective custody in prison look like? If I had to guess, solitary confinement but a little nicer.

I don't really know as far as what it consists of, but as I've understood, apparently its where a lot of pedophiles try to get transferred to? I may be wrong, sorry if I am, but it's apparently pods or something are split up and apparently if you believe you're under threat by people you have a chance at getting moved to protective custody I believe. Right, it's really a shame that they don't just leave his ass in a general population, which hopefully he can receive.
