Much of Southeast Asia only gained independence in the last century and many of them hold their independence leaders in high regard. Singapore is a particular case because it's a tiny island holding a Chinese majority in the midst of a bunch of Malay-majority countries. The official narrative is that the country wouldn't have made it on their own but they did because of the leadership of the forefathers. Thus the insane respect for them and him just celebrating the man's death rubbed a lot of people the wrong way.

As for the nationalism part, I believe there's a saying going around echoing the idea that one should "love the country but not the government". Yee may not be popular for what he did, but the government's response doesn't seem like it was too popular either.

Singapore kept growing and developing as a country. They're oversensitive cucks about religion with their stupid blasphemy laws, but lots of people are these days. It hasn't led to the country being bogged down in corruption and stagnation like, say, Egypt, where Nasser is a much respected figure.
