It goes deeper than that. If you read about his Singaporean free speech case, according to his mother, he would go in and out of courtrooms and prison with a big smile on his face, enjoying the cameras and the attention and not caring at all what it was putting his family through emotionally and financially. When he took refuge in the US, he was diagnosed with Narcissistic Personality Disorder. He even accused a Christian pastor who helped him (after he insulted religion) of molesting him and then immediately walked it back and admitted he said it for attention, and then said the pastor was a naive idiot following dumb religious dogma for helping or trusting him.
He had a repeated pattern of having no empathy for other people and doing self-destructive things for attention and fame, so it was a completely reasonable assumption that he'd lie for attention and say horrible shit to get a reaction. Especially since every time he'd talk about it, he'd have a smug, jovial infliction and a smug, shit-eating smirk on his face.
Unfortunately, it turned out the only mistake people made was overestimating his humanity.

This is good news but you know what would be better news? That after his jail sentence, where he's been kept in protective custody as all chomos are, he's deported back to Singapore where he's caned and then thrown into whatever deepest, darkest prison they have there and left to rot.
