They wanted him to be their symbol for free speech. He was being jailed for saying offensive things about Christianity and guess who jumped on that? That was during the time when firebrand atheist channels were huge. Once they hitched their wagons to this guy and he started talking about his other passion in life (trying to fuck children) they took it as him being the edgiest troll who says fucked up shit as some commentary on the virtues of freedom of speech. I'm glad the fucker is getting some real jail time. Singapore basically said "We'll let this guy out if you get him the fuck out of our country," and the atheist community rallyed to convince the government that he was just a troll who got persecuted for saying things.
Note: When I say "atheist community" I mean people who watch and support channels like AmazingAtheist back in the period where those channels were popular.

I forget who did it, but some researcher asked self-identifying pedos who claim they're fighting for kid's rights to be molested have sex with adults this question: What you do if you asked a child to have sex with you and they said no? The overwhelming response was "oh, they've been brainwashed to think it's bad, so I'd do it anyway so they could see how good it feels." Anyone who argues that kids can/should have sex with adults has at least some psychopathic tendencies I believe. You have to be to think it's even ok to think about it.

Yeah he was a child actor, the film you were referring to was "I Not Stupid" which was quite a popular hit back then, since it touched on how overly focused on academics it can get here. It's on Netflix in Singapore, not sure about internationally. Here's him in a Popeyes ad which also had another Singaporean lolcow Steven Lim in it.
Regarding the "traitor of the nation" comment, it's a sore point with local males since it's almost impossible to escape your military duties unless you desert and never come back, or your health is absolutely fucked. Our only Olympic gold medalist coudn't even get an exemption lol. This was in America. He's from Singapore and lives in America. The reason people are talking about how he would fare in Singapore is he is likely to be deported after the 6 years.
As for why only 6 years? Well, for just one of many examples, Rittenhouse victim and civil rights activist Joseph Rosenbaum was sentenced to 10 years (ended up doing 14 due to infractions) for actually molesting multiple boys, at least some of whom were younger than Yee's grooming victim. So a man who committed multiple physical assaults got 4 more years.
