I guess some good came out of this.

Aw, I was coming here to mention the 3 dead were all autistic train enthusiasts and/or sex offenders and if there even is a difference.

What people report they felt or saw doesn't always match up with what happened. People reporting "the train struck something" doesn't always mean it has. Especially to a lay person who was busy reading the stocks pages of the NYT at the time of the crash. The NTSB are the guys who actually issued a report and it states the train was doing way too much for that bit of track.

The AP is saying that an anonymous official mentioned an object on the track. I haven't seen information that claimed that quote was based on interviews with passengers. (But it's possible, of course.)
