An airline worker died after being 'ingested into the engine' of a plane, NTSB says - At least it wasn't Southwest

An airline ground crew worker in Alabama died after being "ingested into the engine" of a parked plane on Saturday, said the National Transportation Safety Board.

In a statement provided to NPR, the NTSB said it has opened an investigation into the death. The incident involved an Embraer 170 aircraft, a medium-range jet that can hold about 70 passengers, which had flown from Dallas Fort-Worth to the Montgomery Regional Airport.

The victim, whose name has yet to be released, was employed by Piedmont Airlines, a subsidiary of American Airlines that operates at more than 80 airports. Neither company responded to NPR's request for comment.

"We are saddened to hear about the tragic loss of a team member of the AA/Piedmont Airlines," said Wade A. Davis, the airport's executive director. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time."

The airport grounded all flights for five hours after the incident, which occurred around 3 p.m. on New Year's Eve.

People briefed on the matter told Reuters that the engine was running at the time of the incident. The NTSB confirmed the parking brake on the aircraft was also set.

More details on the death will be released in a preliminary report in two to three weeks, the NTSB said.

Jets have been around for ages. They have absolutely studied human ingestion in military experiments.
Also, I don't know if you've ever been near a jet engine, but they are scary. They literally invoke the most primal kind of fear. You can sense that this thing can kill you if you get near it. It requires amazing levels of stupidity to be near a thing like this and not realize you are in extreme danger.

Just the sound it makes says "stay the fuck away from me."
It's unrealistic to assume the issue was a lack of awareness that you should verify that an engine isn't running before you walk in front of it because it will suck your dumb ass up.
Frankly anyone with a functioning brain who hears the sound a jet engine makes knows not to approach it. This dumb whore was not just stupid, but literally dumber than an animal.

I can't believe someone this stupid lived long enough to pump out three retards who will almost certainly go on to become criminals.

We'll probably see the footage some day.
Back in the 80's and 90's there was a subscription video Fire/EMS training service called "American Heat". It was substantially worse than those old school "Faces of Death" videos. Since it was training for Emergency Services Providers they had no qualms about showing the vast libraries of gruesome OSHA Fuck ups captured on camera. Every month a new Snuff Film. I guarantee if they are still around they will be using the video from this event by summer.

The airline need to sue her family for the damage.
Hold that suit in reserve for when her family inevitably sues THEM for killing her through racism, or something.... since even though she was warned 3 times to not do it, she did it anyway, and that's' clearly not HER fault.

It's 99.9% certain that the sheboon had her face glued to a screen and had earphones blasting some ghetto music during worktime and got what she deserved. But that's what you get when you hire the absolute dregs of society to fill a quota

They may have done it before when an aircraft engine was idling and formed the habit.
Jet engines still move a lot of air at idle, you wouldn't get away with walking in front of it just because it's idling. The danger zones for ground handling are defined based on ground idle. The engine involve in this accident probably burns around 500lb/hr at ground idle, knowing that you can intuit how much air it is moving at idle based on the fact that they run a very lean air fuel ratio and the core doesn't use all of the air ingested in the combustion process, plus there's a bypass ratio of 5:1 on this engine. A quick google search yielded this source http://tealgroup.com/images/TGCTOC/sample-babeng.pdf which rates the engine at 445lb/sec at takeoff power, that's 335,340cfm at standard density going through a 46" fan, even if you scale that down by a lot for idle that is still a shitload of air moving.

I'd bet this is down to some overworked employee being forced into taking a shortcut. They may have done it before when an aircraft engine was idling and formed the habit.
No, it was due to a retarded employee refusing to listen to multiple safety regulations, multiple safety meetings in the immediate lead up to the event, then ignoring the big flashing lights that were there, and ignoring numerous employees warning her not to go near the engine right before she got pulped. This was the exact opposite of being forced into a shortcut.

Tell me you've never been near a jet engine without telling me you've never been near a jet engine.

Someone should tell her family "Warned thrice and my duty is done" like the old tales.

I've been near plenty of them. I've also seen enough workplace accidents not to take pleasure in someone being killed and have an understanding that it's never just one person's fault.

People tried to warn her, the pilot leaned out of the window and shouted at her. That's not how you control or operate a dangerous piece of machinery, if there's obvious retards wandering around ignoring instructions, then you shut it down until you get control of what's happening.

In fact the people briefing the inspectors that they warned her, are actually damming themselves. I kind of suspect it's a non union workplace because a union rep might warn them of that.

If one person is obviously not obeying instructions or isn't competent to be in the area, then whomever was in charge should have acted.

Incidentally this briefing to the newspapers about why she was a dumb fuck, maybe take that with a grain of salt.

The other people to blame are the people who hired this idiot and chose not to fire her after the first time she ignored the "stay the fuck away from that thing it will kill you" warning.

Some people are just too stupid to be around machinery like this and shouldn't be allowed to be there.

Hard to enforce things when it's racist and you're the one who gets fired instead.

I've been working around aircraft for over 20 years and the worst I've seen is someone walking too close behind an aircraft with engines on and getting knocked on her ass, but otherwise being fine. Granted the Embrarer 170 is much smaller (holds ~70 passengers) than what I work around (757's up to 747's, ~200 and 400-500 passengers respectively)

I'd wager one engine on that aircraft costs ballpark 1 million dollars. I can promise you no airline fucks around when it comes to not breaking them.
the plane had a wingspan of about 85 feet, and from what I can tell looking at some pictures, its about 25-30 feet from wingtip to engine, about the same from the nose to the engine. if it's running at an idle, there's probably a good 10 foot danger zone in front of the engine. If people are waiting on the perimiter for an ok signal or the like, they could be standing 15-20 feet away from danger, which is just fine if no one does anything stupid.

I think no one understood just how retarded she was. Someone walking up to the perimiter of the plane is nothing to worry about, I've stood at the invisible line waiting for the all clear probably a thousand times, having other people come up to stand and wait with me I hardly even register. Once she continued onwards, everyone yelled at her. the problem being even at a leisurely pace, she would clear that 25-30 feet in 6-7 seconds, even less if those last 5-10 feet were her being airborn. there isn't a sawstop equivelent for jet engines, which by their nature take a second or two to even slow down. It is simply not realistic to expect a pilot to recognize a retard and be able to react to said retard in that time frame. Most people when they get yelled at to stop will at least stop and assess the situation, not fuck up harder.

I'd be interested to see the full incident report about where she entered the perimiter and where other employees where standing and all that. I've done lots of safety work over the years, including recreations of accidents to showcase to other employees what not to do. Heck, if we work haloween, I tend to bring a big ol pumpkin in and smash it with some of our heavy equipment in interesting ways just to make it more interesting.
