An equivalent to "sage" that imageboards have? - Being able to post in a thread without bumping it to the top of the forum.

Should users have the option to post in a thread without bumping it?

I don't see the point. Why would you want to make a post and not have anyone see it?
2 cases:
  • Someone else may see the same thread and be similarly interested and so will see it.
  • It may be a post as a response to another poster in said thread. They will get the notification and may respond without cluttering the front page with an old thread.

i'm 35% sure that me necroposting Gligar13Vids's thread lead to Byuu extorting Null and putting the site through hell for literally zero reason
so i'd think twice about necroposting in the first place if i were you

OP, you were supposed to sage new-ish shitty threads, not old ones.
That's pretty specifically a 4chan thing. The point of sage was originally a "polite" thing where you didn't shit up the front page by bumping old posts. 4chan, in particular, popularized sage as an insult to the OP.

You don’t always need to add your two cents to a topic that’s several months old. Sometimes silence is best - and I mean that seriously. Some impulses should not be acted upon.

I don't really see an issue with "necroposting" on forums.

However, whenever I bump an ancient thread I generally go ahead and do some research so that I'm at least contributing new content. I generally try to do this with most posts in cow threads in general though.
