Andrew Torba / Gab (Gab.com / Gab.ai) / Dissenter (dissenter.com) - An incompetent captain sinking millions of other people's dollars.

Gee.....who could have guessed Torba would completely fuck up his new Brave Fork? Honestly the guy has to be one of the biggest fuckwits on the internet.

Andrew Torba's new plan is to link up to the fediverse/Mastodon in some way or another. Since Mastodon has a hard-left userbase in quite a few parts of it and including it's developer, this is going to be fun to watch if Gab is going to link up to other instances. If it's an API it's a clever move to evade bans but who knows how long it'll be before some client devs decide to "bash the fash" by blacklisting that specific url (and other URLs of "problematic" instances)? On the other hand if it's actually going to connect to other instances it'll be hilarious to watch the fediverse crowd lose it as the people they hate show up. Expect Gab to be on the list of every instances "blacklist" as some get so paranoid they use whitelists.

Ironically, considering how Torba projects usually go, it's more likely they get banned first because they somehow fuck up the implementation and break the network.

Gab has confirmed that they are in fact switching the main site over to using a modified version of Mastodon's codebase. The big thing is that they're going to be tacking things onto Mastodon as well and open sourcing it.

Torba himself has commented on a few things, but first a cow crossover with a guy who freaked out at the farms.

On third party clients and the new features:

On federating, there will be no "fediverse" feed like Mastodon/Pleroma offer and it's obvious why:

On Mastodon's dev being pro censorship:

I'll update this if any more interesting questions are asked.

One day later update:

Someone who knows their shit explains why Andrew Torba might have issues in classic Torba fashion. Ruby on Rails (what mastodon uses) had scaling issues for Twitter. On the other hand Mastodon does have some huge instances that have sizes comparable to Gab (such as Pawoo).
1559244710773.png1559244732610.png

As you can expect with services that have had codebase switches or upgrades with features missing, users are asking "hey is this old feature I like gonna be there?"
1559245054543.png

Some are skeptical and feel that Apple/Google (or woke activists) will demand Mastodon clients block instances.

More people are asking the "will it federate" question:

Basing their social network on a federated platform and not being part of the fediverse is like having a email account that can only can messages to other people on the same domain.

I'm really looking forward to the boomers on Gab getting a taste of the fediverse. Mastodon is one thing but the other instances that run on pleroma or GNUsocial are hardcore weird.

Edit: Minor update. Gab's uh...."CTO" has a message for the people making fun of him on the fediverse. Get a load of this nigga.

I can't figure why Torba and this Colbert guy are trying to jump platforms to something based on the Fediverse.

The majority of Mastodon instances are full of leftist trannies and furfags who are just going to block Gab for wrongthink. The Pleroma instances are mainly right-wing anime nerds posting loli and some trolls who are ex-Gab users who hate Torba... Gab will block these to avoid getting goatse'ed or spammed with trap porn. The only Fediverse instance I have seen with a userbase compatible with Gab is Thomas Wictor's social.quodverum.com, with a bunch of pro-Trump boomers, just like Gab... probably some of the same people on both platforms already.

They might get to leverage iOS and Android clients if the app stores and/or developers don't block their instance.

Otherwise I guess they are just abandoning their crappy code base they've botched up over time.

Torba has become obsessed with the idea of "forking" open source projects. By that I mean he takes their code and slaps his own shitty logo on them. Gab and Dissenter are such poorly designed sites that after millions of dollars, endless ebegging, and several years of work, still run like complete shit.

Better to simply make a mastodon instance and call it Gab than to actually create anything that works.

Torba is an incompetent who can't code and is too cheap (he's going to have to pay a premium for people to blacklist themselves by working for him) or too stupid to hire people who can. Linking to the Fediverse is the 2nd good idea he has had and is going to create lots of popcorn moments.

Gab has now cut over to their Mastodon fork.

It's working well so far actually- roughly as stable as ever, which considering the fact that Mastodon is a kludgy mix of 5 or 6 different 'trendy' web technologies slapped together, with a typical Mastodon server having maybe twenty active users at most, is really quite impressive.

If you have a Gab account, you can visit and see what Gab's userbase has to say about the changes.

Torba decided to use 7/4/2019 to roll out a new, and even MORE broken, version of gab.

Pretty funny, how bad he is at coding/hiring competent humans.

He almost had some of it working for a bit, and broke more than half of it again.

Must need an excuse to ask for more shekels.

I am sure he will find a way to blame this on mastodon coders, and ask for even more money.

Drunken end of day thought:

How do we know andrew or amy torba, or both, aren't furfags?

Too bad he disappeared all investor contact phone numbers.

Does anybody remember weerd beard from threeper forums, back before vanderboegh died?

There is an east coast fag, that seemed almost identical, as far as style/personality, that has been one of torba's ass sucks. Created a whole bunch of useless stuff based on the broken gab api fork of good code.

I bet he is the the saddest man in north america today. Wish I could think of his goofball gab name.

They should all do a podcast together with that libertarian tard in vermont, and stream themselves shirtless, but with leather jackets, trying random code or mres mailed in by their fans. Either would be funny.

as of today's date, Gab is no longer accessible in the UK
I don't know if this is our Orwellian overlords deciding we're better off without access to it or fuckups on behalf of those running it but this thread has me tending towards the latter
And if it is your Orwellian overlords, the stopped clock theory strikes again!
