Andrew Torba / Gab (Gab.com / Gab.ai) / Dissenter (dissenter.com) - An incompetent captain sinking millions of other people's dollars.

I posted this awhile back I think, But his web hosting outfit has been involved in some pretty shady stuff, like bogus online pharmacies.

Monster is a real piece of work. He claims to be pro-freedom of speech, but here's his actual takedown policy:
An anonymous Epik employee said:
A site goes up — we get 300 complaints calling us neo-Nazis and harbingers of death
Basically, if he gets a few complaints from some yentas who have just read an ADL article, he'll take your site down regardless of content. Rob Monster is an enemy of freedom of speech.
No wonder he and Torba found their way into bed.

Is there anyone at all worth following on Gab?
The site is so dysfunctional right now that notifications are broken, and the timeline jumps out of sequence. Crashes are happening almost hourly. None of these issues have been fixed and support doesn't bother responding anymore. Even if there was anyone worth following you would struggle to get their content.

It's a fun community for what it is, aesthetically it's probably the best social microblogger around, but Rob has made a mess of it, programming-wise, so things tend to break more often than one would prefer. If you need a Twitter/Facebook alternative right now, there are better options, including kiwifarms.cc

For what it's worth, I haven't had this experience. The major bug right now seems to be that either the home timeline or notifications don't pull anything, and you're left with a blank screen, but usually, if you wait a minute, refresh, occasionally clear your cache, that fixes itself.

It was in bad shape for a while when the staff essentially neglected the main site for an entire year in favour of pointless side projects, but after the latest frontend was installed and was such a heavyweight disaster that it DDoS'd the site (in addition to barely functioning on release) they had to buckle down to get the site performing, and they've done okay. Sucks that they ditched the AP spec to get that working, but even so, the current iteration of the site is probably objectively the best in its 4 year history.

Gab is now on their own servers. https://news.gab.com/2020/09/30/gab-just-became-resilient-in-a-big-way/ ( http://archive.vn/895Rj )

Let's see how Gab will fare for the next round.

Today is a tremendous milestone for the Gab community. After over a year of work Gab is finally migrated to our own in-house servers. If you talk to anyone in the technology industry they will tell you that this is no easy task. Most technology startups have the luxury of using third-party cloud hosting providers like Amazon AWS, Microsoft Azure, and others.
Gab does not have this luxury.
Over the past four years we have been banned from multiple cloud hosting providers and were told that if we didn’t like it we should “build our own.”
So, that’s exactly what we did.

They're selling this as a good thing, and it is, I suppose. What the reports don't say is the absurd bottlenecks it keeps hitting on a site of mostly dead accounts. The new server has literally thousands of GB of RAM, it's ridiculous. Like, their numbers aren't a secret, they were on every Mastodon relay for a year. Gab has a few thousand active users, the same as the larger Japanese sites running the same software that don't need monster hardware to run their shit.

It's been speculated that Rob just doesn't employ load balancing for some reason. Between the rewrite and the hardware spamming and the side projects that never get finished, they've wasted thousands and thousands of dollars, and the result is a site that's... okay, at best? But nothing that Kiwi Farms doesn't also run better on the side on a shoestring budget. It's ridiculous.

Gab TV is the Tucker Carlson Network!

He's not wrong, but yet again he's regurgitating right-wing talking points that are at least 10 years old. He treats his extremely belated acknowledgment of Republican malfeasance as if it's a major revelation. Most people who follow him already know Fox is part of the Kosher Sandwich, but I bet if you used that term he'd ban you from Gab.

If you'd like a daily dose of laughter, I'd recommend subscribing to Gab's email list:

It's like reading a boomer relative's Facebook post.
They're always the highlight of my day.

In one of them he pitched a Gab satellite. Nigger can't even hire people to run his site properly on their biggest year probably ever and he wants to go to space. Unbelievable faggot.

Btw, they were supposed to launch a Youtube competitor this year, and a Zoom competitor, and they were supposed to finish the Telegram competitor, and upgrade the site backend! I will give the smert minds of Kiwi Farms exactly one guess as to how many of these projects got done.

Gab replaced the CTO after the technical disaster following Election Day. Let's see how the new guy performs! The last two guys were retarded, but I've heard at least that Newfag is a good guy.

Not gonna be optimistic like I was early this year, but Gab does have a cool vision, if the CTO Newfag gets it done I'll be happy.

Countdown to disappointment marked here ^

Really short version cause I don't care as much as I thought. It seems like Rob Colbert, the former CTO has been lying about the progress of the software rewrite, and that it actually never got done because they kept firing everyone they hired to make it (Apparently he was too busy jerking off and making Boomer memes to do it himself? Cause he sure hasn't been maintaining anything else.)

He's been coping really hard, which is kinda funny. But he apparently kept his role over the shitty side projects. He just can't touch the part that matters now.

The new CTO actually has a solid resume. Maybe he'll do something good, but from what they're saying, the game plan has changed, we just don't know to what yet. Surely they can't stay on Mastodon, the site is just now usable again since Election Day. I've attempted contacting him for more information, hopefully he responds.
