I am enjoying seeing this man shit on Gab for their awful practises. From what I've heard Torba has been nothing but a headache for the wider community.

He really fucking is, even though they haven't been federated for a year. Because when people go to Gab as their first attempt to support an independent alternative and they have a poor experience, it also puts them off of projects that take themselves seriously. People aren't going to go alternative by alternative until they find a single good one.

It's not even a knock against them personally. I think most of the people working on Gab are good guys, but this business is a joke and I'm embarrassed that these dorks are the only ones making any money.

I still don't understand why Torba decided to fork Mastodon of all things instead of setting up a new Pleroma instance. Maybe I'm talking out of my ass here, but it seems like Pleroma is the more hospitable place for Gab's "audience," so-to-speak considering how so many Pleroma instances end up getting blacklisted by the wider Fediverse as a whole.

I don't know why. I mean it doesn't really matter, it's not ideological software. But I can take a few guesses.

>Pleroma is tiny and unproven under large loads. Big Pleroma instances are still dwarfed by the big Mastodon ones to this day.
>Pleroma didn't have a good Twitter-esque frontend at the time. It would've been more development work.
>Mastodon is written in Ruby. The devs they already had knew Ruby, but not Elixir.
>They didn't research it. Mastodon has the name recognition, so that's what they went with.

Take your pick. It may be one or all of these.
