Animaniancs Reboot Being Considered

Eh, I just don't see a remake like this working tbh. While it was funny it was also rather edgy, but unfortunately most of the jokes have gotten pretty dated. i fear if they follow the same formula it's just gonna be the same old jokes we hear in South Park/every other cartoon trying to be South Park: fuck Trump/88 genders/europe so white lol. And then we'd hear "controversies" like Pinky and the Brain should be a gay couple already cause MUH CURRENT YEAR, that Hello Nurse should be a hijab wearing black transwomyn, that this and that and other crap taken off tumblr...

I just...Enough with this 90s nostalgia, Netflix. Enough with these reboots. If I wanna engorge myself in 90s nostalgia nothing' s stopping me from sitting down one night and watching the nicktoons of my childhood online. They don't need "current politics" to be good or give me the actual "nostalgic" feeling.

I think such a reboot will most likely suck for a couple of reasons.

As mentioned by others, the original's charm depended a lot on the animation style. Which I doubt they could emulate in a way acceptable to what they consider nowadays standard.

Second, the humor. Aside of the adult jokes they could get away cuase of clever writing and political jokes that managed to make fun of situations in general withut being mean spirited in general, here is something to consider:

Animaniacs was an embodiment of parodying 90s pop culture!

Animaniacs came out in a time where the movie and entertainment culture of the 70s-90s was on a popular peak. And the people on the show knew that and made fun of anything they could get their hands on. Celebrities, politicians, movies, tv shows, mindsets.

The best satire of the show was found in the Warner shorts that made fun of the Warner Bros movie business, Pinky and Brain who made fun of american culture and Slappy Squirrel, who made fun of what moral guardians wanted cartoons to be (in that regard, also the Wheel of Moral segments). Slappy herself was in my opinion the greatest, by some people overlooked thing of the show, as it was literally a callback to the good old slapstick dynamic of Willy Coyote and Road Runner shorts or Tom and Jerry.

What is there that Animaniacs could make fun of in terms of "popcultur" nowadays that could lend itself to a great joke? the Ghostbuster reboot? The Dc movie universe being grimdark as fuck in the eyes of nerds? Face it folks: Our modern day entertainment culture sucks so hard, it doesn't even lend itself to a nice parody.

Animaniacs 2020 or whatever will suck ass, because the movie industry of the last decade will have sucked ass.

And don't get even started on how everyone will be offended cause representation and all the other shit.

I think someone could do good satire on our current dumpster fire of a culture. We just don't have the right people doing it.

I seriously doubt you could get the cel animation style of Animaniacs in Flash or Toon Boom or Blender or whatever smart people are using these days. Maybe you could. With Spielberg in the production end of it, the money is probably available. But I just still anticipate the kind of shit that makes you grit your teeth remembering the original.

The original was pretty expensive to make, almost the opposite of the current trend of constantly reusing models and static shots of stationary characters. The animation platforms currently used almost encourage that kind of laziness, and Animaniacs always looked dynamic and everything was constantly in motion.

The other more serious problem, though, is there was a culture against executive interference and the writers pretty much had free rein to do a lot of stuff that wouldn't have been tolerated in more constricted settings.

Finally, if you didn't bring back a lot of the original show staff, I don't see how you get anything like the dynamic the show had.

I may be jaded from seeing way too many "why the fuck did you reboot this shit" things lately, particularly PPG.

I guess what I'm saying is I don't want to see a reboot, but I wouldn't mind more episodes of stuff like the original, and I just don't think that's possible today.

Yeah we all know this song and dance by now. It'll be superficially similar to the original show, have cost-effective animation, and kids will watch it. It will likely wind up being a sound business decision and not much else.
