Anime is gay, except one show

I'm new to anime, but it needs to have a unique selling point. There's too many mundane, slice-of-life shows that are little more than "cute cartoon girls doing stuff".
Even that can be good, even if it's maybe played out now.

You should check out Azumanga Daioh, which is kind of the granddaddy of that genre, but it's simply a hilarious and charming show, even if it inspired a bunch of not as good imitators.

I like other, later shows like that like Lucky Star, but I will go to bat for Azumanga as a legit great show more than I'd go to bat for something like Lucky Star.
 
It is odd how people react with such hostility to it, I could understand it not being everyone's cup of tea but the way people get so angry about it and it's fans is odd.
