Anime/Manga - Discuss Japanese cartoons and comics here; NO CULTURE WAR DOOMPOSTING!

My review of the recent Clevatess episode:

NERU NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

It's been years but I'm back in the game and watching anime again. Started with the Evanescence adaptation, and it's pretty good so far, with kind of a Blade Runner meets Dark City setup. I've definitely heard that it gets bizarre later on and there's a game show episode, but I might be getting it confused with Texhnolyze.
The OP is excellent.
I love Ergo Proxy, I should rewatch it, it's been over a decade or so. Has some of the worst dub side voice actors I have ever heard, to the point that it's almost endearing, but I thoroughly enjoyed the show regardless. Even if I frankly didn't really get it.

It's always the same unironic statements from supposed "fans" of anime who defend inane pop-culture reference riddled localizations and the abhorrent standards of American dub VA work.

"The original was bland, it needed spicing it up!"

"They really gave personality to the characters!"

"The original VA work is just as bad, you just can't tell because you don't know Japanese!"

Once upon a time, actors who actually worked on the stage or TV did dub VA work, now it's all Funimation nepotism hires who can only do two voices, incredibly niche e-celebs, and people who were picked up for cheap by Crunchyroll and can't change how their voices sound half the time. Plus, it's all part of an increasingly cliquey talent pool of untalented people. As opposed to Japan, where the talent pool is considerably wider, and the VAs have professional training, because it's a trade. You hear complaints about non-actor celebs in Japan providing voices for dubs of foreign movies, but it's nothing like over here.

They don't hire people because they posted 30-second audio clips of them narrating obnoxious memes to social media and they got a few likes, or they're a niche micro-celeb TikToker or Youtuber with a stupid screenname or because, even though they have less acting skill and range than a cinder block, they know someone who knows someone who knows someone.

this one is nonsense
the entire reason why voice acting exists is to give what's being said emphasis beyond the meaning of the words

There is debate in the CRPG community whether voiced dialogue adds or detracts because western VAs are absolute dogshit. I know it sounds ridiculous, but if you take dubs into account and consider how unnecessary this aspect of gaming really is since most before the modern were made without dialogue, it begins making sense. If the only option for consuming an anime in english was reading subtitles with no dialogue, I'd take it over having voiced English dialogue. It'd be like reading a manga only animated, which is a lot of fan animations on the internet really.

And a unique problem in anime is every fucking time I see a dubbed clip now, there's a complaint on what they changed. You don't even need to understand Japanese to know they didn't say a shitty reference or mention some modern internet bullshit. It's so bad it's even gotten into the subs at this point. I was reading the Tsukihime Remake (I know it's a VN but it's relevant regarding this) and they changed the protagonist essentially calling the female lead a stupid bitch in our context to just stupid, and her offense to it makes so much less sense. Plus, sus. Sus. Jesus, nothing takes me out more than them using a shortened word I have never heard anyone use in my life. Fucking Amogus

These problems can be explained with the same issue plaguing just about every aspect of modern Occidental culture; Stupid liberal women run everything.

I made this clip. It is from the anime "Now and Then, Here and There".

There's truckloads of adapations of eroge. But for most of them the sex scenes are incidental enough that they often had all-ages rereleases and the adaptations skip over them. This anime Nukitashi seems unusual in that its whole joke premise is that it takes place in a dystopia that as the subtitle says is "like a nukige" (term for games that are more porn than plot, literally translates to "fap game" or "jerk off game") and so there's constant sex and rape going on everywhere.

It goes into psychoanalytical concepts quite hard later, and sortov loses itself in esoteric talk/visuals about "The Self". Full on Freudian (mommy-issue jew)/Nietzsche (ubermensch who died in an insane asylum) type shit.

It's like the best girl keeps getting better or something.

Not even close:
I could do this shit all day.
absolute KINO. not a great song per se, but i've rarely an ending theme encapsulate the theme of the series so well.
i'd also rate Black Lagoon's rendition of "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" pretty high too, it's short sure but i think it's surprisingly fitting for the arc's themes and its much more somber mood.

Fan Subs > Offical Subs
I recommend downloading torrents from nyaa.si if you have a vpn and some storage space. They have pretty good fan-subs.

SubsPlease isn't a fansub group, they just rip directly from CR. Same thing with Erai-Raws and any other sub group that gets them out extremely soon post release.

Fansubs are generally better and even for seasonals they end up having higher quality video along with the subtitles. The only downside is you're usually waiting for a couple of days after an episode's release before you can watch.

Didn't know that about subsplease. I thought they quickly translated subs and released them.

Though fansubbers like Commie and so forth are very good. Much better than official subs usually.

Dubs are fun because they ARE funny. If i want to watch it seriously, i'll turn the sub on. I can walk and chew gum my man. I won't defend them as better most of the time- unless they are. Some shows are better dubbed, some are better subbed. Honestly, it doesn't hurt to watch a show you like in sub and dub to spot the differences and decide what you like the most out of the two.

I liked Jormungand but Koko's ultimate plan is retarded and short sighted
Humans have been killing each other since they existed, temporarily fucking up all of technology won't put a stop to that even for a single day. Even her brother was calling her a dumb ass. On top of that what does she do after this? If anyone figured out what she did which is inevitable she's going to have a massive target on her back from every country on earth along with anyone who helped her. Really contradicts her plan of protecting the people she cared about.
Tho it was a nice change of pace seeing the main character being useless without her bodyguards. Made it feel more grounded

SxF III trailer is out. Still no release date. Guessing first week October, so two months and change to go. To be honest, while I dig the cute family stuff, the most interesting thing about SxF to me has been the darker aspects simmering underneath the surface and the "totally not WWI and WWII" that happened. I'm hoping that they cover the war as brutally as they can considering Samurai X and YuYu Hakusho alumni have worked on the series.
