Frieren continues to be just about the only modern franchise I can give a shit about. The manga features a Motoko that has a PURPOSE for actually existing: simply living, just like normal human beings, she has hobbies, responsibilities and desires. Things that drive humans to continue existing that the 1995 film strips away. Motoko in the manga is very humanlike and doesn't let her body shackle her whole existence like the 1995 film portraits. That is the whole fucking point of the story and the 1995 film reduces it for "am I human? Bullshit" without actually showcasing Motoko actually being human like the manga does it.

And very few ghost in the shell works that came after actually understands this and just get so reductionist views it piss me off how literally the first one got it right.

If I recall correctly, the sex scene was a side gig that Motoko used her body components in a way to "prostitute" herself into being paid money by her friends to be able to feel something else and use this very money to pay for the maintenance of her body.
