Which is fine if you assume he was holding the idiot ball for his entire adult life and did not know that the military leadership, including the weird cultists, are sketchy and duplicitous as fuck. In a well written setting he would have known the caliber of the people he was serving under from rumors at least and not have been completely blind sided. He would have been serving anyway as they are the only military force that can stand up to the zombies but there's no plausible universe where he is literally the first person fucked over like this (although his fucking over was spectacular in that they were sacrificing one of their old-tech loli wizards as part of it)
Oh yeah because in the age before mass media everyone was a conspiracy theorist who believed that their governments had it out for them.

OK I guess you didn't know this but people before cell phones talked to each other. When you send a unit to die for little military gain the soldiers around them know and remember it. I'm OK with the soldiers in the military not knowing whatever bullshit the priests-faction are undoubtedly up to but soldiers as far back as antiquity have known when their comrades routinely die for no good reason and it generally ends badly for command after a while.

A man will fight long and hard for a piece of colored ribbon.

This is a society which is wholly or in large part ruled by a theocratic body which paints the war as a holy crusade to save all of humanity. This religious governing body controls all media, most of the public venues, and all the governing roles within society. They are more than free to paint dissenters as vile traitors and weaklings who lack in the faith which shields and empowers all of the nation to continue on. Sure, dissenters will exist, they will always be around, but without unfettered freedom to speak their minds in an uncensored forum in front of masses of people from all walks of life, nor solid evidence to back up their claims, they will forever remain on the fringe and not be able to push their way into the mainstream just like conspiracy theorists without powerful patrons always have. We're shown time and again that the men of the knights are filled with quite literal religious zeal for their work, that the church and the shadow government are more than able of maintaining a solid public face, and that the church is both efficient and ruthless at dealing with people who could potentially shatter that in any meaningful way. Furthermore, if the entire unit dies then they're martyrs and serve as fuel for the religious zeal of other units. You can't go on about how you're "interested in worldbuilding" and then ignore the worldbuilding that is present in the show.

That's the problem; I can't suspend my disbelief if it requires the soldiers in the show to be demonstrably more stupid in service to the plot than any in history.

In what way? Soldiers do retarded shit all the time in order to follow retarded orders and always have.
Can't think of a single example of soldiers indefinitely running into a meat grinder constructed for them by their own leadership. Closest thing to this situation that comes to mind is Russian side Battle of Stalingrad but at least Stalin eventually got tired of all the terrible generals Stalin appointed which helped morale immeasurably.

light novel trash does not deserve this much discussion
Pretty much where I'm at with it; I like a lot of garbage anime and will shill for it with asterisks but if you tell me you think Re:Zero is shit because Suburu is holding an idiot ball to justify the suffering I'll hit you with a "Yeah that's probably fair"

the dude literally throws his life away and immediately becomes obsessed over some mediocre isekai princess pussy

It's funny how quickly Kenshin drops off after Kyoto. Like it gets into Christian blood wars, filler, and feng shui magic dragon bullshit... Kyoto and the lessons learned within are pretty much a perfect stopping point anyway so it's not like you need to see it all. I tried finishing the latter half of it this weekend but it just wasn't interesting to me. And you never get the same kind of fights afterwards... still clowns on the new version though.

I say if they get to the latter stories where they search for Kaoru's dad, they should poke fun at the original OVA where Kenshin and Kaoru supposedly die. Same thing happens, only the grown up Yutaro rushes with Megumi telling them there's a cure. Cut to their son Kenji as the girl asks "What? I thought they died?"

In case you weren't already aware, everything after Kyoto was just anime filler meant to stall time until the manga ended before they would start adapting the third story arc, but it got canceled before they could get to that point. If you're interested in that arc you're just gonna have the to read the manga or I guess watch the remake anime if they're doing it. The first OVA that covers the flashback sub-arc is really good though. The second OVA which made up it's own future epilogue for the characters was pretty pointless.
