So I have put in 100+ hours of play into Heroes of Might and Magic V within the span of a week completing all of the campaigns (on Steam) . I'm now going back to II and III which I have on GOG, though the campaigns are a little lackluster. I don't find much fun playing against a computer so I was thinking it'd be fun to play against some of you tards.

Don't play the campaign, download a pack with 10,000 maps for HoMaM 3 and chip away at it like solitaire.

Age of Wonders 2 is really good, fun in multiplayer as well.

edit: Master of Orion 2, play that one. Not exactly the same but it's cut from the same cloth.

I wanted to say "III" just because it was one of those PC games that could do digitized speech through a regular PC speaker without a sound card (an impressive feat in the early 1990s when you're used to your PC just delivering beeps and boops for most sounds) but I checked Wikipedia before answering and realized that the Might & Magic III I remember playing is a different game from Heroes of Might and Magic III.

The best is the real original, king's bounty

It's impressive how many iterations of the same game mechanics have been made. (Yes same publisher and developer)

Archers shooting zombies since forever

Paying skeletons money to fight is an idiosyncracy

As is meaningless roadsigns and turning treasures into xp

Too bad the strategy at the end becomes "just find the cave where you can hire dragons and camp that" plus you can fly around the map and collect anything you missed that way.

That's funny. That's not how you spell "A complex logistics simulator of truckdriver heroes to move troops around instantly while trying to develop the neo-industrial magic revolution of dimension door"

I played the shit out of III back in the day. Many years later I checked out VI because it was like $1 on Steam and holy shit it was terrible. The good news about VI is that it will probably crash before you get to experience much of how bad it is (or the mouse cursor will just disappear, that's a fun one).

If you want a modern HoMM experience, the closest I've found is Age of Wonders III. Every now and again I boot it up and play nothing else for weeks, it's addictive as fuck. Not as sophisticated an economy system than HoMM, but a much better battle system and a huge variety of races, heroes, creatures and spells. The campaigns are surprisingly decent for this sort of game, especially in the modern era. Gigantic replay value.
