Yeah, Heroes III was definitely my favourite. I still come back to the game once in a while.

I played II only once at my friend’s house and don’t remember much about it.

I will defend IV. I hated it when it initially released but when I came back to it few years ago, I actually enjoyed it. It’s nowhere near as good as III but at least tries to be different unlike V.

V was the last title in the series I played. I enjoyed it a bit at the start but quickly got bored when I realised it was just a clone of III with less content (less towns, units, no flavour texts).

My only experience was playing III (I think it was III) with a friend who would turn off all the sound components on game so it wouldn't slow down. Would even turn the physical speakers off thinking it would squeeze out a little bit more performance

I I never played much of. II was fun, but I got it and III at the same time, so I played it much less. III was my favorite, obviously, and also my first exposure to HoMM (my dad was already a fan of the mainline M&M series). Armageddon's Blade soured things a bit for my dad (who I got into HoMM) and I, for reasons anyone familiar with the mainline probably already know.

IV was an odd mix of "better in one area, worse in another", and it was all over the place. Splitting your army on the go added so many possibilities, and heroes being able to fight like a mainline series party member was pretty cool, but the balance was way off, I didn't like factions being combined (like death + inferno), and the economy in H4 could eat ten dicks. I didn't know NWC was going under even as they released the game, but it made sense in retrospect.

V was blatantly a poor man's copy of III from the start, and I never bought another after that.

As said earlier, my father was a fan of the mainline Might and Magic series. For the unaware, the "Conflux" town was originally supposed to be "Forge", IE the Heavenly Forge, a pre-Silence matter replicator that could create all sorts of tech on the fly. It was central to MMVI and VII. The Forge town was to have units from the other factions, but upgraded with technology. Goblins with blasters, Zombies with buzzsaws for hands, Minotaurs with jetpacks and cybernetic claw hands.

My dad just about jizzed himself. Then the announcement came that the forge town was being scrapped due to fan outcry and my father hopped on the internet and started bitching on a bunch of fansites, and, since we hadn't gotten a devoted phone line for the dialup yet, my mom got mad that she couldn't talk on the phone because dad was too busy calling people niggers on the internet.

3 is brilliant. I wish there was a mod that ripped the redrawn hd sprites/art from the remaster and added them to the original game, since the remaster is so shallow for content other than that

Wasn't there a comparison image showing that the remaster actually had lower quality sprites compred to the original, due to how they fuzzed the borders and relying on really shitty interpolation?

Isn't 3 getting modded to add new factions to it? I thought I saw something about that a few months ago but never got a chance to follow up on it.

There is Horn of the Abyss which adds Cove and Factory. There is Wake of Gods but it's crappier looking also I think there is another which had a scrapped town.

Horn of the abyss added a new faction, some bugfixes and balance changes but doesn't diverged much from shadow of death in a complete package. It's what most people used to play online.
In the wake of gods has a lot more shiny new things, run on scripts so it's highly customizable. If you don't like certain elements you can just toggle it off unlike Hota where you either have to get the whole thing or none at all. Down side is that running on a million scripts at once turns out to be very prone to crashing.

You should have just made "Any slavs here?" thread, then asked like 4 who do not like HOMM to leave.

I prefer II and III, that is why I am eyeing Succesions Wars mod for 3. I completely suck at playing XD

the economy in H4 could eat ten dicks.
The funniest shit I have seen anyone say about IV.
Lineup design philosophy it had also gotta eat dicks...but atleast we never got NWC V.

It was not, Conflux was planned for Shadow Of Death, and they actually were struggling with making Forge not a poop pile of reused assets with incoherent style, so fan complains were mere final blow into Forge being canned and unfinished Conflux hastily completed.
You can google for interviews revealing that.

There is a fanmade HD edition predating remaster, play this.

OH MY GOD, A WILD WOGGER 0_o

HotA added entire piles of content, all custom made, and is still updating, while WoG, scripting aside, only has "borrowed" or frankensteined assets for most of the part, and nobody updated it proper since 3.59, all the new forks are same shit.
You are going "putting few shit recolors makes a game actually better than what is, badically, an entire add-on" for real?

II still holds up graphically due to it's wonderfully cartoony style and the soundtrack from the expansion is an absolute gem. Gameplay wise, it clearly shows its age, but the Succession Wars mod that turns HoMM III into II is something I'm very much looking forward to.

III is obviously great, that's not even up for debate so I'll gloss it over - except to say that Castle numbah wan.

I liked HoMM IV - it does a lot of things differently and doesn't quite understand why it does them, but it's a laudable effort. Heroes being units in battle is a sound idea, but the balance is absolutely trash.
Creature growth being daily prevents the massive player one advantage of taking an enemy city on Day 1 of any given week and immediately getting a garrison up which makes taking the city back and holding it for anyone else that week way harder. But, again, the balance is some bullshit - if Vampires are going to be that good, they shouldn't grow at a rate of every other day.
Caravans are great, period.

I played V briefly back in 2006 and hated it, haven't bothered with the rest of the series since

Mayhaps I worded the initial part poorly. Yes, Conflux was already in the works and jammed in to replace Forge.
That said, "poop pile of reused assets with incoherent style"? There was already a set artstyle for Forge, art deco. There are plenty of assets left for it that seem pretty cohesive to me. Backgrounds, a bunch of sprite work. Plenty of reused troops, yes, but I fail to see A) how that's a problem when the entire point is that Forge is arming regular HoMM creatures with Heavenly Forge tech and B)Conflux ended up reusing sprites, too, and a lot of them, so how was that an improvement?
Yeah, there's also plenty of staff who were gung-ho on Forge until the higher-ups pulled the plug on it as well.

It was only a variant, tho:

And I should've worded that more softly, sorry.

Putting neutrals into a city is not the same thing, tho.

I would have never complained if they made the "remade" ones DIFFIRENT, as in, other breed of minotaur (horn shape, colors), diffirent zombie (they actually had a concept), why is tank a Naga and not just an entire new chick in the first place?..
But the ones they showed were merely reused assets.

Wonder why they did not think of making concept art-exact Orc if they needed a greenskin, HotA had made one just to replace "swear it is not goblin".
