I don't disagree on Quatre's ideals, bravery, or character arc but we were watching the show as children and everyone that I watched with just wanted to watch giant robots blow shit up, hence the popularity disparity for Sandrock. Gundam has merits that age well and I think Wing's popularity is justified, even if it gets convoluted and goes over the head of the target audience.
I'm dropping shade on it just because I see the flaws now. I was nuts for it as a kid. Its just that from a more scrutinizing standpoint it does have its faults, but it sure was fun. Very popcorny. It's too bad they never animated some of the comics but that was all the junk the fangirls were into.

Anyone else make Ludacris custom gundams in their notebooks as a kid? Or swap parts? I tried sticking missile launchers on DSH. It didn't occur to me that it would defeat the purpose of the stealth/speed.

I think I gave TV Wing Zero the Epyon's giant sword or something like that and giving Epyon the twin rifles, which defeated the purpose of that suit. I remember having both kits and swapping parts between the two. Really need to revisit the series since it's been almost 15 years since I saw the whole thing.

Back when it was just possible to stream things, I used to set up a retro Toonami stream with the bumpers and everything.
But my friends involved, who were all wammin, shut me down when I tried throwing in dragon ball abridged. (Back when it was new and novel, honestly they should have thanked me for choosing the abridged version.)

Anyway there's alot in the show to like.

I remember a lot of the awkward kids idolized Heero, Trowa, and Zechs being "cold and mysterious" and some lulzy behavior happening as a result. Duo was my favorite pilot due to his voice actor and being relatively upbeat. I also liked Treize due to him being a "honorable" bad guy or something. Either way Toonami was a solid line up of shows and Wing was a great intro to Gundam.

Scott McNeil improvised a lot of lines. Good guy from what I hear.

But anyway back ontopic, although with GW the gundams are so tied to the characters that sometimes you have to talk about it.

I learned quite a bit about painting stuff with gundam, but the last run I did, the last series (I ended up getting rid of mine a while ago) I did matte paint which I feel might have been a mistake.

Oh neat, a thread for this. A buddy of mine who is big into anime got me into gunpla fairly recently. He knew I've always been a tabletop gaming nerd, but was never really big on painting, so pre-colored models seemed right up my alley.

The big draw for me was that apparently there's a fairly elaborate fan game made by old-school 40k fans using 1/144 scale kits. I skimmed through the thread, but haven't seen any mention of it. It's called Mobile Suit Skirmish, and taking a cursory look through the rules, it looks pretty solid. Their forums are locked down right now due to spammers, but I managed to grab the rules beforehand, if anyone is interested.

Haven't had a chance to try it out yet (said buddy got the coof, scrapping our plans get a game night together), but might run a trial game this weekend.

So hyped up, just got my confirmation email that I won this bad boy from the Bluefin 2020 prize draw. Local store was giving away the tickets with Gundam purchases over the holidays.

Reading through here and just enjoying all the different models on display. Great job on your building and painting. Now, I've been busy with limited income so I haven't built a big model, but I did get my hands on a 1/144 scale macross 7 stealth valkyrie. It was dead simple to build (snapfits be praised), but I was trying to use Gundam Markers for some lining work, but my silver was pooling so the legs are now silver, but I think it came out ok. I also painted the eyes red with Gundam Marker and it came out awesome. It doesn't transform sadly, but it did come with a separate jet mode (not pictured due to it being nothing but a jet), and it was cheap too (eBay is saying around 45 to 60 after tax and shipping). So for future projects I plan on sourcing a Legioss variable armo-soldier from Wave (major difference between variable and the set versions is that its unpainted) and trying to source Dappy's family. But, until next time.

Currently working on the RX-78-2. Was looking at either Wing Zero or Shining Gundam as my next project. The only issue I have is that there are like 5 versions of Wing Zero out there. Any recommendations? Money isn't an issue.

From the reviews I've seen all the RG kits from #28 Tallgeese on are pretty decent. Everything before the Tallgeese has a very flimsy internal skeleton that gets weaker over time. I've built a RG Zaki II that has the skeleton in it, it's way more detailed than the HG kits and has way more articulation but has become a little floppy in the past year.
Well, I built my first kit. Took your advice and got the RG Tallgeese. Super detailed. I used a Sharpie to do the panel lines, a gold paint Sharpie to turn the yellow pieces gold, and a silver Sharpie to do panel lines on the dark parts.

Learned some important lessons during the build and I've been reading up on techniques since I finished. I was nipping too close to the parts, so I'll be nipping further up the sprue and then cutting and sanding off the nubs. I also picked up both a 0.2mm drafting marker and a Gundam pour marker for the panel lines; I'll see which one I like more. I ordered some matte topcoat to make them look better.

It was a fun build, but I'm not a fan of how insubstantial RG kits feel when built. Plus, my hands are hurting from the crab claw grip I have to use to hold the tiny parts while I clean up and line them. My second and future builds will be MG and PG for sure.

I've already ordered the MG RX-78-2 Origin and the MG Ball ver. Ka so I'll have something to do on days off as I transition to a nocturnal life for my job. What MGs should I pick up after these are done?

What kit is that? It's so cool.

usually, and this is just what i've *heard*, but the newer versions of kits are almost always better. definitely dont get the original kits for that series, because they're a couple decades old now, and it shows

Aside from Ball, are there any MG or PG gunpla models that aren't anthropomorphic? Tanks or uniquely shaped robots or anything like that?

Just got this guy built up. What a fun easy build, highly recommend to anyone looking for something a bit bigger then a HG but easier then a MG. I really want to get metal garurumon and omnimon now.

As much as I dislike Hobby Lobby due to their insane religiously bent leaders (the fact all of their Dead Sea Scroll fragments were fake and they were forced to return thousands of artifacts is just delicious Karma), capitalism wins out and their 40% off deal is insane if you have a good selection. Managed to walk out with an RG Wing Gundam Zero EW and paid under $20 for it, which is an insanely good price for Real Grade.

My P-Bandai Rocket Bazooka GM Cannon also arrived today, so the backlog has been pleased by the tributes this month. Next Month will see my get the Todesritter and the Pale Rider Space Type. I'm going to be set for another long Corona summer.

I euphorically tip my fedora to you, fellow autist.
