Have you seen the Power Rangers megazord model kits? I'm so sad I missed out on them when they were new and reasonably priced.
Yea I've seen them too, I wished I could get them too but they are hard to find now and expensive too :( if I could get one I would but I can't afford the normal asking price they normally command now.

I think MG’s are the best bet, only issue is the relatively limited number of kits available.

HG’s are honestly kinda hit or miss for me. Sometimes they’re great, sometimes they’re a complete mess.

Limited-quantity kits are the bane of this hobby. I was fortunate in that the few kits I was looking to get did get another run, but for kits that might not have such a wide appeal that’s hardly a guarantee.

I agree with the limited kits thing. I was lucky to find a deal on the MG heavyarms that I plan on custom painting (by hand because I don't have a means of air brushing in my apartment without building a booth and poor ventilation of air where I made my work space). But still limiting kits because of the exclusivity of the series is kinda wonky and it makes it annoying to track down kits reasonably before plague economy times hit

Friend of mine got me into gunpla during quarantine, but I've been building mostly the digimon kits. The Metalgarurumon and Blackwargreymon kits are really fun and gorgeous!

The Digimon kits I’ve seen have all looked really nice. It’s too bad I’m not a fan of Digimon designs in general or I would’ve picked up one or two.

Completely fair! Some of the designs are hit or miss. Thats just how it be.

Will say if you are interested in picking up a kit: avoid Amplified Omegamon. That kit isnt put together great, especially considering the shoulder is on a flimsy peg that's prone to snapping off.

So I finally went to my local kit store, I didn't take any photos however i picked up this $9 kit! I'm a Char whore at this point due to my hyper focus and I don't care. Came home andddd fuck.
Yea any tips- thank god it's a snap together so YAY but how the fuck do I paint this before I go spend $50 on a gundam airbrush kit eventually? My brother said paint it before I put it together and he's probably right byt I'm going to hit up some tutorials. I'm itching to put it together before spring break ends in a few days.

Also if anyones curious I saw this for $45 and wanted to know what the hell it is outside of "Char's Zaku". They also had some JUMBO Gundam of Amuro's and a guntank that I thought was pretty cool as well so I'll try to find images of it online since I was too busy getting excited.
Edit: I threw everything under a spoiler just to make it less congested

There was more kits there, but these are the ones I came into contact with that I thought were pretty cool even if I have 0 idea what half of them are. There was also this GIANT box of Amuro's gundam like it was big. The box size was like American Girl doll sized? If I go back any time soon I'll photo it.

That char kit looks like a reprint (due to it having the new blue Bandai sticker) of the old First Grade kit which I wouldn't really consider a starter kit since it's just one solid color and you'll need to paint it. It also has pretty limited mobility and I'm not 100% sure it doesn't need glue.

Of the other kits you posted the first is the MG Z'Gok in Char's colors that he uses later in the series, it's an older MG so I'm not sure about how good it is (would definitely find a review). That big gundam is the ver.2 MG that I've heard is pretty okay though the newer 3.0 is better, I personally can only vouch for the MG RX-78-2 O.Y.W (Anime Color) kit as I built that one fairly early on and thought it was a fun/easy build.

The other one is a ver.ka which means it's designed by Katoki, I've heard that a lot of those kits are pretty finicky though I'm unsure about that specific one. The last one is just the HG guntank which is probably the most beginner friendly of the lot as it's a lot smaller, doesn't feature an inner frame to build (staple of all MG kits), and is overall a simpler build. For most people starting out it's recommend to start off with a HG kit, the newer kits usually come with english instructions that'll be helpful when learning the ropes of how a typical build will go (general build flow and what all the symbols actually mean that are used during the build process) since once you get that down it's pretty much the same for every other build. If I were to give a specific recommendation I'd go with the HG Leo as it's a super simple fun build that features english in the instruction manual and looks pretty good just out of the box (it's also fairly cheap).

Here's a good intro video to gunpla, goes over the very basics, doesn't help with painting but it's good overall information.

That kit fucking SUCKS. I accidentally bought two of them (thankfully they were only $5 at my store) thinking they were the more recently-released entry-grade kits that actually have decent color separation.

If you want to paint it (which you need to if you don’t want it to not be solid red), I’d just spray a coat of hardware-store primer and spray paint, then hand-paint the joints and details with a small brush. I’d also recommend just gluing it into a static pose, because seriously, this kit sucks.

YES. It's WAY better to sell off that stuff. To be fair a lot of posters here should be selling their gunpla, too, since I've seen the literal walls of unopened boxes a lot of us have, to the point where homies look like they live inside a warehouse. But as for Bionicle, I'd say definitely sell it if you don't have kids or nephews to hand it off to. You'd be surprised the kind of money you can make. It's genuinely the best option.

fuck you i can build my 45 mgs whenever i want and definitely arent buying anymore of them

I usually got there once a month with my family since my brother is into airsoft and my dad likes to go look for airplane models for his WW2 collection. I'll probably pick up the Guntank by then since it was pretty affordable. I did find out the MG Z'Gok was $45 and according to amazon, it's mainly a bitch in the legs and the claws will pop out. Looks WAY bigger than the Zaku I bought today but oh well. I'll check out the video real quick! I keep seeing that in my recommended and I probably should look at it. The store also had these prebuilt looking figures? They looked more like action figures but they were near the model kits regardless.

I mean, it DOES have snaps, but my dad was like "I'm buying extra glue anyways."
It said no glue required, but I mean hell I'll take the advice. Knowing my hands i'll probably snap something off by accident even WITH the exact-o blade.

I have a HORRIBLE habit of impulse buying shit after I get into something I won't deny it, but I've yet to really have a major "ah shit" purchase outside of this S.H. Figurearts Infinity War Bucky figure, but that's another story all together. Even if this kit is an absolute bitch i'll probably still be happy with it since I like to have a variety of things in my collection from handmade OOAK stuff to official merch. I think my stupid autistic dream is to own as many Char figures/gunpla's that's within a reasonable price and throw some Amuro in there for good measure. Will say, I don't think I'm EVER touching this one kit my brother owns which is like SUPER TINY. I think he said it was from gundam seed? He has a little of it built but he kinda left it in a box to collect dust since it's super tiny but it somehow makes my $9 zaku look like a chonky boy. But I do have some primer and spray paint so I might do that tomorrow. I also have an industrial airbrush (thing bout a big ol honker, not the small ones), but i've yet to even touch my OOAK stack to practice on so i'll probably put that to the wayside for now.

Another weird question is would MSC (Mr Super Clear) and water color pencils work on anything or just stick to the paints? I'm only asking since I do OOAK dolls and was wondering if any of that knowledge might translate over to working on gunpla's.

It's not a finicky kit or anything, it goes together really easily. It just has terrible parts separation and articulation. I wouldn't recommend anything other than paint.

I built Z'Gok a few weeks ago. It's interesting in some ways, but it just feels... old. It even has a rubber runner. Not polycaps, but actual rubber. The arm and leg mechanics are awkward. The claws themselves are secure, but the flat red circle that holds the three claws together is not secure at all; you can push it with all your might, but it consistently pops right back out as soon as you take your finger off. I ended up super gluing it in without getting any on the claws, and it's solid now. No real panel lines to speak of. The only recessed spots to color in are really wide, so they're hard to line. I had to force myself to finish it, and very little of it was enjoyable. This is not one I'll display. It's going in a box.

I actually like my MG Exia but I glued a bunch of pieces onto him to make him stay together. After that he is rock solid though with great poseability.

Will still buy the 2.0 because I am a sucker for 00 kits.

This is the only Gundam you will ever need. Once you build and paint this absolute fucking CHAD immediately move to WWII planes and ships because you've peaked with Gundam and nothing else will ever satisfy you again.

I did you one better and ordered the MG Heavyarms Igel Unit. Now I'll have both a Gundam and a WWII tank.

What is this? I tried google translate and it came out as Cardboard game machine. Its very kiddy but it looks like some kind of every kiddier GBF. I want a kit haha.

Looks somewhat like LBX, which they made kits for though I'm unsure of the quality of them. Was looking to build some myself since they look pretty cool but I'm scared they'd be sticker hell.
