Christopher Reeves plays Richard Collier a theatre student who is approached by an old woman and hands him a watch saying "come back to me" she goes home and dies. 8 years later he is a successful playwright who becomes obsessed with the photograph of a young woman named Elise McKenna at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, Michigan.

He realises it was the old women who died. Through self-hypnosis, he transports himself back in time to the year 1912 to find love with actress Elise McKenna.
