SHARM EL-SHEIKH, Egypt (AP) — Big emitters of the heat-trapping gas methane can expect a call from the United Nations starting next year, when the global body launches a new platform to combine existing systems for tracking the potent greenhouse gas from space.

The U.N. Environment Programme said Friday that the new Methane Alert and Response System — MARS for short — is intended to help companies act on major emissions sources but also provide data in a transparent and independent way.

It draws on satellite measurements performed by NASA and the European, German and Italian space agencies. Data from private satellite operators will also be incorporated in future.

“Each of these instruments give us a correct answer to a question that is slightly different, because each of them see different things,” said Manfredi Caltagirone, head of the International Methane Emissions Observatory at UNEP. “So the only way you can have a correct picture is to connect them all together.”

The data will be released 45 to 75 days after it is gathered, meaning companies will have sufficient time to fix the leaks by the time they become public.

“We think it is important not to just create a shaming tool, but to engage the operators and governments so they can act on the specific event,” said Caltagirone.

Releasing the measurements on a U.N.-backed platform would also ensure that it is considered neutral and reliable, providing a standard that prevents companies from “shopping around” for data that makes them look best, he said.

There will be no way to force any emitters to take action though.

“We are realistic that certain companies and certain countries will be more cooperative than others,” said Caltagirone. “But we can make sure this information is available to those who are interested in it.”

The first data will be published in the second half of next year, focusing on large methane leaks. As it matures, the platform will incorporate less dramatic but equally significant sources of emissions such as livestock and rice farms.

Cutting methane emissions worldwide is key to the Paris climate accord’s ambitious goal of capping global warming at 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 Fahrenheit) by the end of the century compared to pre-industrial times. The United States, European Union and others last year launched a pledge to cut overall methane emissions worldwide by 30% by 2030.

So India and China will continue to pollute and everyone else will cuck to them. If you think that "climate change" serves any other purpose other than to break down society, you're a fucking idiot.

You know they'll be delicate about the matter and not call the two countries out no matter how much data points their way. The UN will most likely scream and cry for the US and Europe to do something about their emissions, ignoring the fact that both regions have steadily decreased greenhouse gas production over the last decade or so.

Meanwhile, both India and China commit horrendous amounts of environmental pollution (eg: heavy metal poisoning in water, air pollution in the form of smog, chemical spills, etc.) in addition to environmental devastation in the name of land development. China's deforestation has gotten so bad that the government had to intentionally plant a wall of trees in order to stop encroaching desertification brought about as a result.

Even if the UN actually grew a pair and chastised both China and India about their methane pollution, both countries will simply ignore the UN's decree. The UN is a toothless organization when it comes to enforcement.

Mentioning methane, I had a good laugh after they intentionally blew up the NordStream pipelines and started talking about the methane release that it caused. Blatant act of terrorism by the West, yet the media kept harping about the environmental impact of the methane that escaped. I used to feel sorry for the people who bought into this farce, now I feel an intense hatred of them and hope they all perish in a in a slow, agonizing way. I know it's petty and not productive to feel those emotions, but I just don't give a fuck anymore.

Was Methane ever considered to be a greenhouse gas? It seems like it was bumped to the top of the list so the west can kill its own agriculture.
It was solely just Carbon until a few years ago where these faggots are now just going after any organic compound that's necessary for life so yes.

I also expect the UN to do a UN and light a bunch of natural Methane pits on fire thinking it will work because lighting the fart pit in Turkmenistan sure worked out for the Soviets.

"Big emitters of the heat-trapping gas methane can expect a call from the United Nations starting next year,"

UN: Hello? Sir, do you realise that your company is creating large amounts of methane and it's bad for the environment?

Company owner: Go fuck yourself with a rusty fork.

Ignore China and India. Ignore the horrific polluting monsters that are ocean going container ships. Ignore all military vehicles and ships.

But Muh climate change.

If we were actually intending on doing anything about climate change, the globalized economy would be the first casualty, followed by famines in places that are bet importers of food via the globalized shipping system.

In the basic sense of a gas that causes the greenhouse effect it was, but it's never really been considered significant from a climate change perspective, mostly because it doesn't stay in the atmosphere for very long since it's easily broken down.

It'd be really bad if you had a huge spike in methane in the atmosphere but only for a short period of time. I'm not sure what types of events could even cause that kind of situation.

Climate change was never anything more than some feel-good bullshit for some elites to fuck over gullible idiots. If it was actually some catastrophic thing then, as people have mentioned, China and India would be at the very top of everyone's shit list and getting sanctioned to death until they stopped being the leading polluters in the world by an insane margin. The fact that they haven't makes it pretty obvious this is just blowing smoke up people's asses.

Plus I still haven't seen any reasonable evidence that man-made pollution is having such a major effect as opposed to nature going through some tough transitions.
