this is why they're using perceptual hashing, not cryptographic hashes. most minor image modifications won't slip past it. they are not using AI to scan for new images on your phone. they are only going to be using AI to determine if new pictures sent to kids (or that kids send) are sexual in nature, not whether or not they are CP. the state of AI is good enough to tell if something is porn, not if something is child porn.

Mr. Outlaw has an informative video using open-source software to demonstrate something similar to what Apple is likely using.

AI is nowhere good enough to tell if shits porn or not, at least the kind used by corporations. the NSFW filters on sites pick up images like frogs and shit but then people still post NSFW shit and get off scott free. AI based moderation never ends well long term, ESPECIALLY with this shit where it's trying to detect child predators and there's possible actual legal ramifications.

it's not my fault tumblr doesn't use the best and brightest in open source porn detection and classification technology. even just deepdanbooru is better at classifying real life porn than whatever they're using.

It's not just tumblr,it's every single site that uses "porn detection" AI to filter shit. I've seen it happen pretty much universally on all the social media sites owned by large companies. Whether it's straight up denial of posting of an image or some weird minor censor shit like the "insensitive content" spoilers time and time again it's been proven robots are jack shit at detecting sex consistently.

I don't have any experience with big tech porn blockers. I don't post things. it doesn't really matter, though. it doesn't have to be perfect. if people end up getting constant notifications from their kids for sending epic memes they're just going to disable the alert. if they don't, hopefully they catch them being child whores. I don't see this as a thing worth caring that much about, as it's optional, and has nothing to do with the jerkops, vs the wholesale scanning of all imagery you possess on your device and account.

Yeah but it's fine because it's a private company. Surveillance and censorship are only bad when it comes from the government. A private company would never do anything that goes against the interest of their loyal paying customers. It's for their own good.

What's stopping the groups with access from adding anything they want to the database? I.e. get someone's phone, add picture on that phone to the DB, run the check, surprise it returns a positive. If they only have to show a proof of matching hashes to prove presence of CP, would that work?
