No I mean I will admit this was way back, but when folders were first being pushed as the "future" Apple was like "The quality is sub par and every fold degrades the display, we are not interested."

It's long enough ago I don't have the quote, it's like three computers back for me. I'm not an apple hater, I just can't afford to play in that playground.

I asked a robot and it couldn't find an example of such a statement. Perhaps you're misremembering something that a commentator said as an official statement from Apple.

At any rate, does it matter that much? A company is allowed to change their mind to match market and/or technology conditions.

And at that time he was right.

Look at the coverage of the first few generations of Samsung folding phones. The first one they brought out was completely recalled due to how easily they broke.

Apple never said they’d never make folders, they were just honest when the first ones came out that the tech wasn’t there yet. Years of R&D later, they made one they feel is up to their standards and the scrutiny their folder will be under.

Apple is just doing the classic thing where they let other companies do the “Wild West” R&D work, while they come in years later building off of that pre-existing knowledge to make a “refined” version that is up to their standards. Their brand identity is premium and reliable, they’ve never been known for being at the cutting edge of tech. Hell it’s literally a meme that Apple will take something that’s been around for a decade, slap an Apple logo on it and claim they invented it.

Foldables have had like 6-8 years to mature by now, Samsung has already worked out the biggest kinks with the technology to make sure that the fold is going to survive longer than most people keep their phone. Thus, the reasons that Apple cited for not releasing a foldable at the time (longevity of the display) no longer apply.

I hope Apple makes some kind of big AR innovation in the nearish future. A competatively-priced foldable is cool, but I crave something like the Apple Vision Pro that could be like an every-day assistant.
I think all the ideas that went into the Vision Pro were stormed up when the Oculus and HTC Vive were the biggest VR headsets around. But with things like Bigscreen's Beyond and the Meta glasses I think that form factor is going away, as it should. The next Vision product should be something much more akin to those to be acceptable to more people.

My 13 is still indexing, but it’s already faster and legitimately snappy with the new update. I figured it couldn’t possibly get any worse. Full transparency liquid glass and the transparent home icons no longer causing lag or reloading issues.

Why can't I set the browser to close all tabs on exit, so when i launch it next it isn't flashbanging me with whatever I was last browsing?
Have you tried the Orion browser? It’s not the same as a proper Android browser, but it’s less Fisher-Price and there's experimental Chrome and Firefox extension support. Also, I wiped my data and closed all tabs with a button in the quick menu. I didn’t like that very much, but maybe you will!

Freeform finally has dark mode! and my iPad mini doesn't get as warm as it used to when using it even when its still indexing.

Spotlight search was feeling extra shitty for the past few weeks/months, taking seconds to find the app/file I want. But now it's instant again in 27.

All the little new touches look and feel pleasant so far.

I have been running MacOS 27 for about 24 hours.
Apart from being able the change the Glass opacity I have noticed no other visual changes.

I do feel that the unit is a little snappier, a little more responsive than before.

M6 Mac mini benchmarks are coming out

Geekbench 6.3 CPU
Single core 4610
Multicore 20676

Geekbench 7 CPU (vs M5 14 inch MBP)
SC 4071 (vs 3641)
MC 22783 (vs 17948)

Geekbench 6.3 GPU
Metal 97137 (vs 70748/72511 for M5)

So the GPU's somewhere between a M2 Pro and a M4 Pro.

Why has this thread been so active recently? Not that I'm complaining.

I know the Beats brand has a bad reputation but I've always been satisfied with the stuff I've gotten from them. Definitely more affordable than the Apple-branded equivalents.

I'm presuming these controllers will only work with iPhones but it'd be cool to get a "native" controller for Mac which will completely solve the compatibility issues. I've generally been happy with Xbox controllers over the past decade or so, but rumble has never worked for whatever reason.
