After searching this forum for any thread, I see that there exist none for arcade games. Just making this thread for those that want to list their favorite arcade games and discussion about things related to them, be it playing it at some local pizza place, arcade, or even playing it on MAME. To start off, does anyone Kiwi here have any fond memories of playing arcade games? I have a couple related to playing and beating the first House of the Dead and Time Crisis.

I've played a couple of arcade games before. I remember playing Pac-Man and Mortal Kombat machines at a local convention just last year even.

SEGA makes pretty good lightgun arcade games, like Time Crisis, House of the Dead, and the Ocean Hunter. That last one wasn't released for home consoles unfortunately.

Edit: Also where I live the movie theaters tend to have some arcade games. The one I go to the most has this Transformers railshooter made by SEGA, and there's another movie theater that has House of the Dead 4.

Time Crisis was Namco though.

I played the hell out of the original Ninja Turtles arcade game and most of the early 80s classics. I think Soul Edge was the last arcade game that ate all my quarters and was the reason I bought a Playstation.

Aside from what Sikotik pointed out, Sega did have some good light gun games. Rather than Time Crisis, I believe the game you mean is Virtua Cop.

I don't know how arcades fare in other parts of the world but aside from it being strong in Japan, here in the U.S. it's pretty much a shadow of what it was. The only places I remember going to as an arcade most recently was the game room at the college I attend and the games they have there are all from ten to eleven years and back. Having mentioned Japan, they no doubt had some arcade games that could interest one such as a light gun game from this Filthy Frank video
to what is basically an arcade port of Left 4 Dead 2

Anyone ever play the light gun rail shooter CarnEvil? This was a neat little game from around '98. I never achieved getting through it on one coin, but fairly often could do it in two.

Despite being really solid for its time, it never came out in any other format, and unfortunately, light gun games don't port very well to MAME and other emulators.

One of the more ridiculous and hilarious things in it is when you fight a giant zombie baby, blasting the shit out of it with a machine gun while it vomits all over you.

This was apparently offensive enough that some consoles had an alternate version with a giant teddy bear. That or there was a toggle switch somewhere, as some cabinets had.

Dear lord I remember playing CarnEvil years back. It was so satisfying to beat the final boss. First time I reached him, I was so close but I ran out of money. Once I beaten him, it was great to see him get torn to ribbons from the propeller of his blimp.

Just to veer away from rail-shooters, anyone here ever played any sort of obscure arcade game? I remember back when a nearby mall had an arcade, one machine they had was game called Cannon Spike
It was fun playing as Mega Man, shooting everyone that tried to kill me.

Galaga will always be my favorite through I do like Pac-Man from time to time.

I also tend to enjoy light gun shooters so I really enoyed games like House of the Dead.

H2Overdrive is pretty awesome. I leveled up every powerboat.

A shame a lot of them are hard to find these days. When I do see a machine at a cinema or bowling alley, I get really happy that someone does care.

I remember being at my uncle's house as a little kid and playing Ms. Pac Man a lot on an arcade machine he owned. Didn't need coins to play.

I also remember playing through the entire Simpsons arcade game with three random kids at a Chuckie Cheese's. Had plenty of coins on hand, so we were able to get through it no problem.

Finding a machine without needing coins is the best. I remember a few machines that was like that in a college and I played the heck out of it until it broke sadly.

I remember that Simpsons game. I think I played it at a bowling alley. Recalling it, I believe it aged well as a beat em up?

I remember playing my first game Metal Slug when I was probably around ten, and I remember that I managed to get good enough to make it to level 3 without dying by the time that they got rid of the game.

The cinema near me still has arcade machines, with my favorite Time Crisis 2. But most of my arcade memories come from seaside towns, where they're particularly popular. Though they've started disappearing lately, which is a shame. If I ever visit any of those towns again, I hope they still have classics like HoTD or HYYYYDRO THUNDERRRR.
Typically in Poland you'll find stuff from the 90s, but I've actually encountered an OutRun machine three years ago - presumably a hand-me-down from the West brought sometime in the 90s.

Anyone ever play the tower of druaga? Its this old Namco arcade game where you play as a little warrior going through a massive tower consisting of mazes filled with monsters. I used to play it all the time at this little arcade we had down the road. I could never actually beat it, mostly because in order to beat the game you have to find certain items on each floor and to find the items you have to meet certain requirements to make them appear. The only problem is the game never actually tells you any of this and it also never tells how to make the treasures appear. I remember one time out of sheer dumb luck I managed to get to the final floor and fight druaga but I didnt have any of the items you need to actually finish the game. I was soooo mad that id went through like 70 levels and spent all of my money to get there, only to find out I somehow didnt do anything right that I left the arcade and never went back. It closed down like a few months later and I havent played it since. I really wish I could try to get through it one last time, but I can never find it anywhere. :(

I liked Dungeons and Dragons: Shadow Over Mystara. I never actually got to play it at an actual arcade but it had a lot of depth for a sidescrolling beat-em-up.

I can barely visit American arcades now after being in Japan. The few actual games they tend to have mixed in with stuff like arcade versions of mobile games just make me sad. I used to play the hell out of Dungeons & Dragons and other beat-'em-ups. There's a couple of arcades around here that take nickels instead of quarters, but their game selection hasn't changed in years so it's kinda gotten stale.

When I was in Japan, I got really into music games, you know, Bemani games like Beatmania, Guitar Freaks, Sound Voltex, not to mention I actually had people to fight in Tekken and Street Fighter.

Best thing I found that I'll probably never see again was a Lupin III arcade game. It was like a lightgun game but with minigame segments like driving sequences mixed in.

I've got really fond memories of Gauntlet, Gauntlet II, Sinistar, Berserk, Punch out, Tempest, Ikari Warriors, Elevator action, and Spy hunter.

Watching arcade games was how I fulfilled that need for good games once I had no more access to games myself. I played on occasion, but most of my teenage years were spent watching the places.

I learned to hate X-Men vs Street Fighter because of that. Not that the game is bad, it's just that when it's the only thing that has any sound and you're trying to play Marvel vs. Capcom or other games, sometimes you want to hear their sound.

Some of my favorite machines were Samurai Shodown 64 [nearly beat this one!], Cadillacs & Dinosaurs, and Violent Storm. There used to be a futebol machine with a kickable ball, but that part was broken. Later on, I actually got to play the SNK vs. Capcom games, though I have no talent with these.
