Are 4chan and similar image boards really all that much better than reddit?

@Mr.Miyagi put it pretty well. I just wanted to add that 8chan was much better than 4chan once upon a time but rotted away to the same degree as well. The cause of death was a bit different: You see, when the initial split over Gamergate happened, a lot of the talent went over to 8chan. This led to a culture of "enlightened anons" who hated 4chan and thought they were superior, not unlike how 4channers look down on redditors. This was true for a time, 8chan was the place to be if 4chan censored something or if you wanted actual discussions with oldfags. It helped that you could make your own board there, that meant that instead of hoping that jannies won't abuse their powers, you could become the janny and create a board...
It helped that you could make your own board there, that meant that instead of hoping that jannies won't abuse their powers, you could become the janny and create a board dedicated to your topic of choice. This is why 8chan had boards like /cow/ that would never fly on 4chan(if you ask for a /celeb/ board you will just get banned).

The rot started when the quality of the site started going down. Much like 4chan, 8chan had it's moments of fame that led some normalfags there, but the community(and there was an actual community, unlike 4chan and it's ocean of piss) was pretty good at staying insulated and forcing the new meat to conform to the board culture. What really started hurting 8chan was internal drama, obvious glowies and an unholy swarm of Q boomers who came from 4chan's /pol/, apparently once the culture there started making fun of Donald too much they created their own hugbox there.

Then the Christchurch shooting happened and you know the rest. History of the webring, bunker sites and new imageboards made as successors to 8chan's various boards and linking to one another for more exposure, has been a disaster. Everything seemed fine from 2018 to 2020, as many different sites came together to host various boards and even developed their own individual culture. If you didn't like a board on one site, chances are that there would be an equivalent board on another that would strike your fancy. There was a lot of crossover as well, for a little while it felt like a community again, with Julay being the top contender for the next 8chan replacement when that turned to 8kun, a broken husk that only serves as a Qboomer containment nowdays. However, Julay was found to be filled to the brim with discord gayoppers and they dropped their mask eventually, this led to the site dying and the already splintered community being divided even more. Since then, I want to say that for the most part the remains of the webring became tribalistic little islands of inactivity, par for one or two boards that the site had where all the activity went, and general distrust or downright hatred towards the other sites. The elitism and the same discord faggotry that 4chan and reddit mods are guilty of killed the webring, and therefore killed any chances of another 8chan forming.

Check out the 8chan.moe thread here for a perfect example of how one of these husks looks like today, that one has a hilarious little story related to their "legal child porn board", /hebe/. The site had 8chan's /v/ migrate to it when Mark Mann, owner of the board, couldn't post lolicon/drawn child porn in other places. Acidman, owner of 8chan.moe, is an open pedophile who thinks, in his own words, that "pedos deserve a right to free speech". Most anons, and I mean like 95% of them, were against hosting of /hebe/ and were very public about it, this lead to the exodus that 8chan.moe hasn't recovered from to this day(and one Acid copes about consistently, to the point that when a bunch of spics migrated there, he saw most of the userbase speaking Spanish as a "massive success"). Funny thing is that /hebe/ was eventually removed because the feds were knocking on Acid's doors, but boards like /delicious/ that hosts drawn child porn are still there(and has been one of the most active boards for years). The pedos are still there too, you think they're going to leave the site? Truth is that anyone who wasn't a pedophile left moe around 2021/2022 and the current posters there are either fine with it or are jerking off to the "content" themselves. Unsurprisingly, this led to moe(one of the more active splinters) to be delinked from the general webring, further cementing how divided the remnants of 8chan are and how hated Acid/moe users are around the webring.

There is so many stories like this, 8chan has just been a rollercoaster ride from start to finish ever since the original site shut down. At the end, the users have proven that they're not only no different from the average 4chan user, they are no different from a reddit user as well, a crushing blow to the egos of these "oldfags" who still shit themselves when you tell them you're from 4chan, as if this "rivalry" even means anything now that the average 4chan user doesn't remember what 8chan was, aside from the "Q place".

So, to answer the question: No, imageboards and their users are not better than reddit. There used to be a time when that was true, but today they're all one and the same. The elitism is still there, which is hilarious, but it's all just different flavors of one cancer.
